Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Boston

Midnight arrived with a thick, suffocating fog that rolled off the Boston harbor, enveloping the abandoned ironworks in a ghostly shroud.

Marcone had twenty heavily armed men stationed around the warehouse. They felt safe. They felt invincible.

They were wrong.

The lights in the warehouse suddenly shattered one by one, plunging the space into near-total darkness. Panic erupted.

"What's happening? Fix the generator!" Marcone shouted.

Then, the shadows came alive.

Renick did not come with an army. He didn't need one. He moved through the darkness like a true wraith, utilizing the estate’s advanced night-vision tech and silent-suppressed weaponry. One by one, Marcone’s guards dropped without a sound.

"He's in the rafters!" a guard screamed before a flash of gunfire silenced him.

Belle worked furiously against the ropes binding her wrists. "Micah, brace your feet," she whispered. Micah nodded, using his small frame to wiggle against the knots.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the ironworks were blown off their hinges.

Renick stepped through the smoke. He looked terrifying—covered in tactical gear, his eyes cold and lethal.

Marcone, panicking, grabbed Belle, pulling her in front of him as a human shield, pressing a snub-nosed revolver to her temple. "Stay back, Kavanaugh! I'll kill her! I swear to God I'll do it!"

Renick stopped fifty feet away. He slowly lowered his rifle. "Let her go, Marcone. Your men are dead. It's just you."

"Sign the papers!" Marcone shrieked.

At that exact moment, a flock of pigeons, startled by the chaos, burst from the rafters directly above Marcone’s head, flapping wildly. The distraction lasted a mere fraction of a second, but it was all Renick needed.

Thwack.

A single, perfectly placed shot from Renick’s sidearm hit Marcone right in the shoulder, shattering the bone and forcing him to drop the gun. The old man fell to the ground, howling in agony.

Renick didn't even look at Marcone as he rushed forward. He dropped to his knees, his combat knife slicing through Belle and Micah’s ropes in a second. He pulled them both into his chest, holding them so tightly they could barely breathe.

"I've got you. I've got you," Renick chanted, his voice cracking with an emotion he could no longer contain. He kissed the top of Belle’s head, then Micah’s forehead, his hands shaking. "You're safe."

Sully and the rest of the Kavanaugh crew burst into the building a moment later, securing the perimeter and securing Marcone.

"What do we do with him, boss?" Sully asked, pointing to the bleeding Don.

Renick looked at Belle, then at Micah, who was looking up at him with those clear, wise eyes. Renick took a deep breath, letting go of the darkness that had consumed him for years.

"Hand him over to the feds, Sully. With the evidence of kidnapping and the financial records we grabbed from his office tonight, he’ll spend the rest of his life in a federal supermax. The Marcone family is finished. And so is our war."
