Chapter 7 - A Fragile Peace

With the traitor removed and the Marcone family's plans thwarted, a beautiful, unexpected peace settled over the estate.

To celebrate Brinley’s eighth birthday, Renick did something he hadn't done in years—he threw a party. It wasn't a massive corporate event for his associates, but a small, intimate gathering in the backyard for just the four of them, plus Sully.

The garden was filled with balloons, and a massive chocolate cake sat on the outdoor table. Brinley wore a beautiful white dress, laughing out loud as Micah showed her how to make a paper airplane that could glide across the entire lawn.

Renick stood near the barbecue, wearing a simple polo shirt, looking like an ordinary father. Belle walked up beside him, holding two glasses of lemonade.

"You look normal," she teased gently, handing him a glass.

"Don't insult me, Belle," Renick laughed, a sound so rare and rich it made her heart skip a beat. He looked at her, his expression turning serious. "I haven't felt this happy since... before. I didn't think I was allowed to feel this way again."

"Everyone deserves happiness, Renick. Even the Ghost of Southie."

Renick set his glass down and took both of her hands in his. The afternoon sun caught the golden flecks in his gray eyes. "I don't want to be a ghost anymore, Belle. Not with you. I want to be real."

He leaned down, and this time, there were no alarms, no gunfire, and no interruptions. His lips pressed against hers in a sweet, deep, lingering kiss that tasted of hope and new beginnings.

From the lawn, Micah and Brinley cheered loudly. Brinley even jumped up and down, pointing at them. "Look, Micah! Daddy is kissing Belle!"

Belle blushed furiously, but Renick just laughed, pulling her tight against his side, his arm wrapping around her waist like an iron band of protection.
