Chapter 4 - The Breach

"Stay here! Lock the door!" Renick ordered, his tender demeanor vanishing in a split second as he pulled a sleek black pistol from his waistband.

Belle ran back to the suite, her heart hammering against her ribs. She burst into the playroom just as Micah and Brinley woke up, terrified by the sirens.

"Mom! What's happening?" Micah cried.

"Shh, it's okay, sweetie. Come here," Belle said, pulling both children into the reinforced panic closet hidden behind the wardrobe, a feature Sully had shown her on her first day.

Outside, the sounds of gunfire echoed through the courtyard. The Marcone family had done the unthinkable—they had launched a direct assault on the Kavanaugh estate.

Inside the dark, cramped closet, Brinley began to hyperventilate. "Daddy," she whimpered, tears streaming down her face. "Daddy, no."

Micah grabbed her hands. "Hey, Brinley. Look at me. Remember the sparrows? They're flying high above the house right now. They're watching over him. Close your eyes and listen to the birds."

Micah began to hum a soft, rhythmic melody. Miraculously, Brinley’s breathing slowed. She leaned her head against Micah’s shoulder, finding solace in the midst of chaos.

Belle pressed her ear to the heavy steel door. She could hear shouting, the heavy thud of boots, and the unmistakable sound of Renick’s voice shouting orders. The battle lasted for what felt like an eternity, but slowly, the gunfire died down, replaced by the distant sirens of the Boston Police—who always arrived just after the dust had settled.

When the closet door finally clicked open, it wasn't Renick who stood there, but a bloodied and battered Sully.

"Miss Belle," Sully rasped, holding his side. "The boss... he took a bad hit. He's asking for you. Both of you."
