CHAPTER 5 — Emily's Last Secret

CHAPTER 5 — Emily's Last Secret

The photograph slipped from my trembling fingers.

It landed face-up on the conference table the detectives had assembled in my library.

No one spoke.

I couldn't stop staring at Emily's smile.

It was genuine.

Natural.

The same smile she wore the day we brought Leo home from the hospital.

Except this picture had been taken only eight months before she died.

"Where did this come from?" I whispered.

The federal agent looked at the evidence tag.

"It was inside the hidden safe."

I slowly turned toward Victoria.

"You told me you'd never met my wife."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

"I lied."

The confession echoed through the room.

"Why?"

"Because Emily asked me to disappear."

"What?"

Before Victoria could answer, another voice interrupted.

"It wasn't that simple."

Everyone turned.

The older federal agent stepped forward, holding a thick manila folder.

"My name is Daniel Brooks."

He placed an identification badge on the table.

"I've been investigating a private organization for almost nine years."

He opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Children.

Families.

Luxury homes.

Nannies.

Doctors.

Each page connected wealthy families across the country.

Every case shared the same pattern.

Night terrors.

Unexplained pain.

Behavioral changes.

Parents convinced their children were simply acting out.

My stomach tightened.

"How many?"

Brooks hesitated.

"Twenty-three confirmed children."

Clara gasped softly.

"And Leo?"

Brooks met my eyes.

"He was supposed to become number twenty-four."

The room spun.

"No..."

"I'm sorry."

He slid another document toward me.

Across the top were the words:

THE AURORA FOUNDATION

Officially, it was a charitable organization funding pediatric neurological research.

Unofficially...

It was something far darker.

According to the investigation, Aurora recruited wealthy families through doctors, therapists, and private consultants.

Children were observed without consent.

Pain responses.

Sleep deprivation.

Psychological conditioning.

Everything disguised as "behavioral research."

My hands began to shake.

"They tortured children..."

"...for data?"

Brooks nodded grimly.

"They believed extreme stress revealed neurological patterns impossible to study in normal environments."

I wanted to be sick.

Victoria finally looked up.

"I never knew everything."

"You knew enough."

Tears streamed down her face.

"They told me the device would monitor pressure points."

She looked toward Leo.

"They said it couldn't hurt him."

"But you heard him scream every night."

"I know."

"You watched him beg."

"I know!"

She collapsed into a chair, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I kept telling myself they'd stop... I kept believing every lie because I couldn't admit what I'd done."

Clara stood beside Leo, shielding him from the conversation.

The little boy looked confused.

"Daddy..."

"Yes, buddy?"

"Is Miss Victoria going away?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

"I think she is."

Leo was quiet for a moment.

Then he whispered something that broke every adult in the room.

"I don't hate her."

"I just wanted someone to believe me."

No jury.

No judge.

No prison sentence could have punished me more than those words.

Hours later, the forensic team finished searching the safe.

One detective hurried into the room carrying a silver laptop.

"Agent Brooks..."

"You need to see this."

The laptop required biometric access.

Victoria stared at it.

"I can't open it."

"Why not?"

"It doesn't recognize me."

Brooks frowned.

"Whose fingerprint does it need?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

May you like

"Emily's."

The room fell silent.
