CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Inside the Silk Pillow

CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Inside the Silk Pillow
The object bounced once across the polished hardwood floor before coming to a stop beneath the bedside lamp.
Silence swallowed the room.
I stepped forward instinctively, but Clara threw out an arm to stop me.
"Don't touch it."
Her voice shook.
For the first time since she'd entered my home, the calm, unshakable woman looked genuinely frightened.
Victoria's face had turned ghost white.
"James!" she shouted. "Don't let her touch that! It's filthy!"
But she wasn't looking at me.
She was staring at the tiny black object with naked panic.
I knelt carefully.
It looked almost harmless.
About the size of a walnut.
Wrapped tightly in black cloth.
Bound with coarse red thread.
The fabric was stained by something dark and oily.
An odor drifted into the air—sharp, bitter, almost metallic.
Not mold.
Not perfume.
Something far stranger.
Leo, standing in the doorway wrapped in his dinosaur blanket, suddenly began crying.
"That's it..."
His tiny voice cracked.
"That's the thing."
I looked up.
"What thing, buddy?"
He pointed at the bundle with a trembling finger.
"It bites."
The words chilled every bone in my body.
"Bites?" I repeated.
"When my head touches the pillow... it bites inside."
No six-year-old should describe pain that way.
Yet his terror was real.
Clara slowly pulled on a pair of kitchen gloves she'd grabbed from the laundry room before picking up the bundle.
It was unexpectedly heavy.
Far heavier than something so small should have been.
She gently squeezed it.
Something inside shifted.
Not liquid.
Not stuffing.
Something solid.
Something that scraped faintly against itself.
Victoria suddenly lunged forward.
"Give me that!"
Clara stepped back.
"No."
"You have no right!"
"I have every right when a child has been sleeping on this."
Victoria's carefully polished composure cracked.
"You stupid old woman! You don't understand what you've done!"
My head snapped toward her.
"What exactly has she done?"
Victoria froze.
For a split second, her mouth opened—but no words came.
Then, as quickly as the panic had appeared, she forced a smile.
"Oh, James..."
She laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
"It must be some kind of prank."
"Maybe one of the housekeepers stuffed garbage inside the pillow."
Clara looked directly at her.
"Then why did you scream before anyone even knew what was inside?"
Victoria's smile disappeared.
The room fell silent again.
I suddenly realized something that made my stomach tighten.
Every night...
Victoria had insisted on putting Leo to bed herself.
Every single night.
She never let the house staff change his bedding.
She always replaced his pillow personally.
I had thought it was kindness.
Now it felt like control.
"James," Victoria said softly, stepping closer to me.
"You trust me... don't you?"
Her hand reached for mine.
For years, that touch had calmed me.
Tonight it felt ice cold.
Before I could answer, Clara spoke.
"May I ask one question?"
Neither of us replied.
She looked directly at Victoria.
"If this is all a misunderstanding..."
"...why did Leo tell me yesterday..."
"...that she said he must sleep on this pillow?"
Victoria's eyes widened.
She slowly turned toward Leo.
The little boy instantly hid behind my leg.
His entire body shook.
"I never said that," Victoria whispered.
Leo buried his face against me.
"You're lying."
His tiny words barely rose above a whisper.
"You said if I threw the pillow away..."
"...Mommy would never come back."
The world stopped.
My heart slammed painfully against my ribs.
Emily.
My late wife.
Dead for almost two years.
Victoria knew Leo still cried for her.
She knew he talked to her photograph every night.
She knew he believed his mother could somehow still hear him.
I stared at Victoria.
"You used Emily..."
"...to frighten my son?"
"It's not what you think!"
She grabbed my arm desperately.
"I was only trying to help him sleep!"
"By terrifying him?"
"He needed discipline!"
"He needed therapy."
"He needed his father."
Every sentence hit me harder than the last.
Clara quietly carried the strange bundle downstairs and placed it inside a stainless-steel serving tray without opening it.
"I'm calling the police," I said.
Victoria's head whipped around.
"No!"
The scream exploded from her before she could stop herself.
Everyone stared.
She quickly lowered her voice.
"James... think about the headlines."
"You own half the city's financial district."
"A police investigation inside your home?"
"The media will destroy your companies."
Normally, she would have been right.
My public image meant everything.
Tonight...
I didn't care.
I reached for my phone.
Victoria's expression changed completely.
The tears vanished.
The pleading disappeared.
Her face became cold.
Calculating.
"You shouldn't make that call."
I looked at her.
"Is that a threat?"
She smiled.
A slow...
unnervingly calm smile.
"If the police open that bundle..."
"...your son won't be the only person whose life changes forever."
Before anyone could react, Victoria suddenly spun toward the grand staircase.
She ran.
Not toward the front door.
Toward the west wing.
Toward the part of the mansion no one had entered in months.
Clara's eyes widened.
"James..."
"She's going to destroy something."
I took off after her.
May you like
As I rounded the corner, I heard a heavy metal door slam deep inside the mansion...
...followed by the unmistakable sound of a hidden safe unlocking.
