CHAPTER 3 — The Hidden Safe

CHAPTER 3 — The Hidden Safe
“Victoria!”
My voice thundered through the west wing as I sprinted down the marble hallway.
She disappeared behind the old library door.
A second later—
BEEP.
The unmistakable sound of an electronic keypad echoed through the room.
Then came the heavy metallic clunk of a vault unlocking.
My pulse exploded.
There was a safe.
A hidden one.
Behind the wall.
By the time I reached the library, Victoria was already kneeling in front of an enormous oil painting of my late grandfather.
The painting had swung open.
Behind it stood a steel vault nearly six feet tall.
Its thick door hung partially open.
"Move!" I shouted.
She spun around, clutching a black leather folder against her chest.
"You don't understand!"
"I understand enough."
I grabbed her wrist.
She fought harder than I thought possible, digging her nails into my skin.
"You can't read these!"
"Why not?"
"Because everything will fall apart!"
With one desperate shove, she threw the folder across the room.
Papers exploded into the air like frightened birds.
Photographs.
Medical reports.
Bank statements.
Handwritten notes.
Hundreds of pages scattered across the Persian rug.
Clara arrived moments later with Leo asleep against her shoulder.
The little boy stirred as the papers floated around us.
"Daddy?"
"It's okay, buddy."
But it wasn't.
Not even close.
I picked up the first photograph.
It showed Leo sleeping.
Not once.
Dozens of times.
Different nights.
Different pajamas.
Every picture focused on one thing.
The pillow.
Someone had documented it for months.
Another photo showed the inside of Leo's bedroom.
Taken from the ceiling.
Hidden camera.
My stomach twisted.
There were cameras.
In my son's room.
Without my knowledge.
I turned another page.
My blood froze.
It was a payment ledger.
Large wire transfers.
Every month.
Always from the same offshore account.
Recipient:
Victoria Hale.
Purpose:
"Phase Three Monitoring."
Monitoring?
Monitoring what?
Clara slowly picked up another document.
Her face lost every trace of color.
"James..."
She handed it to me.
Across the top were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATION REPORT
Patient ID:
Leo Carter
Patient?
My son had never been enrolled in any study.
Never.
The report detailed every nightmare.
Every scream.
Every panic attack.
Every bruise.
Every emotional breakdown.
Someone had been recording his suffering...
...as if it were laboratory data.
"What is this?" I whispered.
Victoria covered her face.
"I never wanted it to go this far."
"Answer me!"
She looked at Leo.
Tears filled her eyes.
"They promised no one would get hurt."
The room fell silent.
"They?"
She closed her eyes.
"The people who paid me."
My heart stopped.
"You were being paid..."
"...to do this to my son?"
She nodded once.
"I thought it was harmless."
"You called this harmless?"
"I didn't know what was inside the pillow!"
"Liar!"
Clara's voice cracked through the room.
"You knew enough to panic the moment it was opened."
Victoria didn't answer.
Because she couldn't.
Just then my phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
I answered without thinking.
A calm male voice spoke.
"Mr. Carter."
"Who is this?"
"You've opened something that never belonged to you."
Every hair on my neck stood up.
"If your son is still alive..."
May you like
"...consider yourself fortunate."
The line went dead.
