CHAPTER 4 — The Truth Beneath the Fabric

CHAPTER 4 — The Truth Beneath the Fabric

The police arrived within fifteen minutes.

Not just local officers.

Detectives.

Crime scene investigators.

Even two federal agents.

No one explained why.

They simply sealed the mansion and ordered everyone to remain inside.

The black bundle sat untouched inside an evidence container.

One detective looked unusually tense.

"Has anyone opened it?"

"No."

He let out a breath of relief.

"Good."

"What is it?" I demanded.

"I can't answer that until our specialists arrive."

Hours later, just before dawn, they did.

Two technicians entered wearing protective gloves and face shields.

Not hazmat suits.

But close enough to make everyone uneasy.

The older technician carefully cut the red thread.

Layer after layer of black cloth unfolded.

Inside was another wrapping.

Then another.

Seven layers in total.

Finally...

Something rolled into the stainless-steel tray.

Everyone leaned forward.

It wasn't jewelry.

It wasn't money.

It wasn't poison.

It was a tiny brass capsule, no larger than a lipstick tube.

Attached to it was a razor-thin metal mesh covered with nearly invisible barbed filaments.

One technician whispered under his breath.

"Oh, God..."

The detective looked confused.

"What is it?"

The technician swallowed.

"It's been modified."

"Modified how?"

He pointed at the microscopic hooks lining the mesh.

"When pressure is applied..."

"...these hooks press repeatedly into the skin."

I felt sick.

Leo had rested his face on that every night.

The technician continued.

"Normally this would be impossible to notice through pillow stuffing."

"So why would someone build it?"

The room stayed silent.

Then he answered.

"To cause continuous pain..."

"...without leaving obvious evidence."

Clara covered her mouth.

I couldn't breathe.

Every night...

Every scream...

Every time I accused my son of being dramatic...

He had been telling the truth.

I slowly turned toward Leo.

He stood barefoot beside Clara, clutching his stuffed dinosaur.

His eyes searched mine.

"Daddy..."

"I wasn't bad."

The words shattered me.

I dropped to my knees and pulled him into my arms.

"No."

My voice broke.

"You were never bad."

He buried his face against my shoulder.

"I told you."

"I know."

"I'm so sorry."

He cried quietly.

Not because he was afraid anymore.

Because, for the first time...

His father finally believed him.

Across the room, Victoria watched in silence.

Then one of the federal agents opened another folder recovered from the safe.

His expression changed instantly.

"Detective..."

"You need to see this."

"What is it?"

The agent slowly looked up at me.

"Mr. Carter..."

"I'm afraid this isn't only about your son."

He placed a faded photograph on the table.

It showed my late wife, Emily.

Standing beside Victoria.

Smiling.

Between them stood a man I had never seen before.

Across the bottom, written in black ink, were six words that made the room spin.

SUBJECT ONE — TRIAL SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.
