CHAPTER 6: The Man Behind the Messages

CHAPTER 6: The Man Behind the Messages
The name on the tablet hung in the air like a storm cloud.
E. Blackwell.
Julian read the last message again.
If Julian discovers anything, destroy the financial records before he checks the offshore accounts.
He looked at Detective Mason.
"Who is he?"
"We're still confirming."
Richard Cole stepped closer, his face suddenly pale.
"I know one Blackwell."
Julian turned.
"Ethan Blackwell?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Former Chief Financial Officer."
Julian's expression darkened.
Ethan.
One of his oldest friends.
The man who had attended Elena's birth.
The man Julian had trusted enough to oversee billions of dollars before Ethan resigned eighteen months earlier, claiming he wanted a quieter life.
Richard continued.
"When he left, the audit found nothing unusual."
Mason's eyes narrowed.
"Maybe the audit wasn't looking in the right place."
Within the hour, investigators from the company's forensic accounting team arrived.
Julian gathered them in the library.
"I don't care how long it takes."
The lead investigator, Priya Desai, opened her laptop.
"We've already begun tracing the accounts mentioned in the messages."
She projected a flowchart onto the wall.
Money moved through consulting firms.
Then shell corporations.
Then overseas holding companies.
Each transfer was small enough to avoid suspicion.
Individually, they looked harmless.
Together...
They formed a river.
Priya looked at Julian.
"Someone has been siphoning money from Thorne International for years."
"How much?"
She hesitated.
"Our preliminary estimate..."
"...just over eighty-two million dollars."
No one spoke.
Arthur Whitmore lowered himself into a chair.
"Eighty-two..."
Julian didn't react.
Not outwardly.
Inside, however, another betrayal settled into place.
His daughter.
His home.
His company.
The people closest to him had attacked every part of his life.
Detective Mason's phone rang.
He answered, listened for less than thirty seconds, then ended the call.
"We've identified the owner of the cloud account."
Julian already knew.
"Ethan Blackwell."
Mason nodded.
"And he's gone."
"Gone?"
"He boarded a private charter flight three hours ago."
Julian looked toward the window.
"He ran."
"He tried."
Mason allowed himself the faintest smile.
"Border authorities stopped the aircraft before takeoff."
Across town, Ethan Blackwell sat inside an interview room.
He looked exhausted rather than frightened.
The detectives placed printed copies of the messages in front of him.
"We recovered these."
Ethan stared at them.
His shoulders slumped.
"It's over."
"Did Vanessa act alone?"
He gave a bitter laugh.
"Vanessa never acted alone."
Back at the mansion, Mason returned with the first details.
"Ethan is cooperating."
Julian folded his arms.
"What did he say?"
"He admits helping Vanessa."
Richard frowned.
"For money?"
Mason shook his head.
"At first."
"And later?"
"He said greed became habit."
The detective opened his notebook.
"According to Ethan, Vanessa approached him during one of your charity galas nearly three years ago."
Julian remained silent.
"She learned he handled portions of the company's financial reporting."
"She flirted."
"She promised him a percentage."
"She convinced him that once she married you, no one would ever question the transfers."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"So this was planned from the beginning."
Mason nodded.
"Yes."
The following morning, search warrants were executed.
Investigators searched Ethan's home.
His office.
A storage unit rented under a false name.
By noon they had recovered hard drives, financial ledgers, and dozens of luxury items purchased with stolen funds.
Among the evidence was a small velvet box.
Inside lay a diamond necklace.
Julian recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to his late wife.
He had spent years believing it had been misplaced during renovations.
Richard stared at the evidence.
"They stole from your family long before the engagement."
Julian gently closed the box.
"Make sure it goes back to Elena someday."
Meanwhile, Elena remained upstairs recovering.
Her hands were healing.
The burns still hurt, but something had changed.
She no longer startled whenever footsteps approached her bedroom.
Mrs. Alvarez tucked her into bed that evening.
"Would you like me to leave the hallway light on?"
Elena smiled faintly.
"Daddy said monsters can't stay here anymore."
Mrs. Alvarez kissed her forehead.
"Your daddy is right."
Late that night, Julian stood alone in his late wife's rose garden.
He held the childish letter Elena had written to "Mommy in Heaven."
Footsteps approached.
Arthur Whitmore joined him.
"You've had the worst week of your life."
Julian looked at the roses.
"No."
Arthur frowned.
"No?"
"The worst week..."
"...was every week Elena suffered while I believed everything was fine."
Arthur had no answer.
After a long silence, Julian spoke again.
"I can't change the past."
"No."
"But I can change what happens next."
The next morning, Julian entered the boardroom at company headquarters.
Every board member was present.
So were senior executives.
The meeting lasted less than twenty minutes.
Julian stood at the head of the table.
"Today we begin again."
He announced an independent audit of every department.
He established a child protection foundation in his late wife's name, funded with an initial donation equal to every dollar recovered from the fraud.
He expanded employee whistleblower protections.
Then he made one final announcement.
"For the next six months..."
"...my schedule belongs to my daughter."
Some executives looked surprised.
Arthur smiled.
"It should."
The motion passed unanimously.
That afternoon, Detective Mason called once more.
"We've finished interviewing Ethan."
"Anything else?"
"There is."
Julian waited.
Mason's voice became serious.
"Ethan claims Vanessa kept one final insurance policy."
"What kind?"
"A sealed envelope."
"Where?"
"We don't know."
"What's inside?"
"He says she called it..."
"...'the file that destroys Julian Thorne forever.'"
Julian looked toward the family photographs on his desk.
He had uncovered abuse.
Fraud.
Betrayal.
Yet somehow...
The story wasn't finished.
Somewhere, hidden from everyone—
May you like
was one last secret.
