CHAPTER 2: The Playback

CHAPTER 2: The Playback
Julian's fingers trembled as he cradled Elena's tiny hands.
The angry red burns stretched across her palms and fingers. Some patches of skin had already peeled away. Embedded in the cracks were tiny grains of marble polish that no child should ever have touched.
His daughter flinched the moment he brushed against her wounds.
That single movement shattered whatever restraint he had left.
"Who did this?"
His voice wasn't loud.
It was quiet.
Terrifyingly quiet.
Elena lowered her head.
"Daddy... I'm sorry..."
Julian swallowed hard.
"Sorry for what, sweetheart?"
"I couldn't make the floor shiny enough."
Silence swallowed the mansion.
Vanessa forced a nervous laugh.
"She's exaggerating. You know how children are. She spilled an entire bucket of cleaning solution this morning. I simply asked her to clean up her own mess."
Julian slowly stood.
Only now did he look directly at Vanessa.
For three years he had admired her elegance.
For three years he had defended her whenever Elena seemed uncomfortable around her.
For three years he had convinced himself that grief after his first wife's death had simply made his daughter cautious.
Now every ignored warning came crashing back.
Elena refusing to stay alone with Vanessa.
The sudden nightmares.
The mysterious bruises explained away as playground accidents.
The shrinking smiles.
The fear.
God...
He had handed his own child to a monster.
Vanessa stepped closer carefully.
"Julian, you're upsetting her more. Let me handle this."
He raised one hand.
She stopped walking.
It wasn't the gesture.
It was the expression.
She had never seen him look at anyone like that.
Not during billion-dollar negotiations.
Not during lawsuits.
Not even when a former business partner stole millions from him.
There was no anger in his face anymore.
Only judgment.
Only certainty.
Only the cold realization that something irreversible had happened.
"Call Dr. Harris," he said without taking his eyes off Vanessa.
The head butler, who had silently appeared in the hallway after hearing the commotion, immediately nodded.
"Right away, sir."
"And contact Detective Mason."
Vanessa blinked.
"Detective?"
Julian ignored her.
"The family attorney."
"Yes, sir."
"The security director."
"Immediately."
Within seconds the household staff scattered.
Vanessa finally understood.
This wasn't a family argument.
This was becoming an investigation.
She forced herself to cry.
Real tears wouldn't come, so she manufactured them.
"Julian... please... you're frightening me."
No response.
"I love Elena."
Nothing.
"I've sacrificed everything for this family."
Still nothing.
"I was only trying to teach discipline. You said yourself she needed structure."
Julian finally spoke.
"I said she needed stability."
His voice cut through the room.
"I never said she needed abuse."
Vanessa quickly shook her head.
"No! You misunderstood everything."
"I watched you."
"You only saw one moment."
"I heard every word."
"You don't know the context."
Julian reached into the inside pocket of his tailored coat.
Vanessa's confidence flickered.
He removed...
...not a phone.
Not paperwork.
A small black remote.
Her heartbeat stumbled.
Julian pressed one button.
Across the enormous foyer, the seventy-five-inch decorative television mounted above the fireplace came alive.
Vanessa frowned.
"What are you doing?"
The screen displayed a familiar date.
Today's date.
Then...
The foyer.
Empty.
The exact same angle as the room they stood in.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
No.
Impossible.
That camera—
She remembered asking about it months ago.
Julian had smiled.
"Oh, that one stopped working years ago."
She had believed him.
The recording continued.
Everyone watched in silence.
There was Elena carrying a bucket nearly half her size.
There was Vanessa entering with her wine.
Then—
The slap.
Sharp.
Violent.
Without warning.
Elena crashed into the marble floor.
Julian closed his eyes.
The room remained utterly silent except for the television.
Vanessa's own voice echoed through the mansion.
"If you bleed on my floor, you'll scrub twice as long."
Another clip.
Vanessa dumping dirty mop water back onto the freshly cleaned floor.
"Again."
Another.
Elena struggling to stand.
Another.
Vanessa laughing while recording videos on her own phone.
Another.
"You'll thank me someday for making you useful."
Another.
"If your father asks, you slipped."
Another.
"If you tell him otherwise..."
She leaned close to the frightened little girl on screen.
"...I'll send you away forever."
The playback stopped.
Julian lowered the remote.
Vanessa stared at the frozen image of herself threatening a six-year-old.
"I..."
Nothing came.
For the first time in years...
Words abandoned her.
"You lied," Julian said.
She inhaled shakily.
"I panicked."
"You tortured my daughter."
"I lost my temper."
"You terrorized a child."
"It wasn't every day."
Julian looked at her as though she'd confessed to poisoning water.
"It wasn't every day?"
She realized too late what she'd admitted.
"I—I didn't mean—"
"No."
He interrupted.
"You meant exactly that."
The family physician arrived first.
Dr. Harris rushed to Elena.
His professional composure lasted less than ten seconds.
"These burns aren't accidental."
He looked at Julian.
"These injuries were caused by prolonged exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals."
He gently turned Elena's hands over.
"Several layers of skin are gone."
His voice became colder.
"She needs treatment immediately."
Julian nodded.
"Whatever she needs."
Dr. Harris hesitated.
"There are older injuries too."
Julian froze.
"What?"
The physician carefully examined Elena's arms.
"Bruises in different stages of healing."
A scar near her shoulder.
"Healed belt mark."
Another on her ankle.
"Compression injury."
The doctor looked directly at Julian.
"This has been happening for quite some time."
Julian felt as though someone had driven a knife through his chest.
He couldn't breathe.
His daughter had been silently begging for help...
Inside his own home.
And he hadn't seen it.
The front doors opened again.
This time, Detective Mason entered alongside two officers.
Vanessa immediately straightened.
"Oh, thank goodness. This is all a misunderstanding."
Detective Mason looked first at Elena.
Then at the medical report.
Then at the paused security footage still displayed across the giant television.
He turned back toward Vanessa.
His expression hardened.
"I don't think it is."
Julian finally spoke the words that would end everything.
"I want her removed from my house."
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"Julian—"
"I want criminal charges pursued."
"No..."
"I want every bank account frozen."
She gasped.
"You can't."
"I already have."
She stared at him.
"What?"
Julian looked toward the staircase.
"I came home early."
His eyes returned to hers.
"But I didn't walk in immediately."
He lifted the remote once more.
"There are six more hours of footage."
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Six hours.
Everything.
Every threat.
Every punishment.
Every lie.
Every cruel smile she thought no one would ever witness.
Julian's final words echoed through the mansion.
"And by tomorrow morning..."
May you like
"...the entire world will know exactly who Eleanor Vanessa Carter really is."
