CHAPTER 4: The Boardroom Judgment

CHAPTER 4: The Boardroom Judgment

One after another, black sedans rolled through the iron gates of the Thorne estate.

Within minutes, the mansion that had hosted charity galas and society weddings became the center of a corporate emergency.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Members of the Thorne Family Trust.

The company's chief financial officer.

Its head of security.

Its public relations director.

No one had been told exactly why Julian had called them.

Only that attendance was mandatory.

Immediately.

As they entered the foyer, conversations died.

The shattered family portrait still lay across the marble floor.

Police officers stood beside the staircase.

A little girl with freshly bandaged hands sat quietly beside Mrs. Alvarez.

And Vanessa...

The elegant fiancée who had graced magazine covers only weeks before...

stood alone.

No one greeted her.

The chairman of the board, Arthur Whitmore, approached Julian.

"I've never received an emergency summons from you."

Julian shook his hand.

"I hope you never receive another."

Arthur looked around.

"What happened?"

Julian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pointed toward the massive television mounted above the fireplace.

"Everyone, please have a seat."

The room slowly filled.

Twenty-three people.

Some of the most influential executives in the country.

They expected a financial crisis.

A hostile takeover.

Perhaps even news that Julian intended to retire.

Instead...

The screen flickered to life.

The hidden-camera footage began.

No one spoke.

The only sounds were Elena's frightened sobs echoing through the mansion and Vanessa's voice, cold and merciless.

"If you tell your father, no one will ever find you."

Another clip.

Vanessa forcing the child to kneel.

Another.

Mocking her dead mother.

Another.

Destroying her toys.

Another.

Laughing while Elena cried herself to sleep in the playroom.

Twenty minutes later...

The screen went black.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Arthur slowly removed his glasses.

His hands trembled.

"I've negotiated with dictators."

His voice was barely audible.

"I've witnessed corporate espionage."

He looked toward Vanessa.

"I've never seen cruelty like this."

Vanessa jumped to her feet.

"Those videos are edited!"

No one answered.

"They're taken out of context!"

Still silence.

"I loved Elena!"

Arthur turned toward her.

"Please stop speaking."

His tone remained calm.

"But every additional sentence only makes this worse."

The public relations director, Melissa Grant, broke the silence.

"We have a serious problem."

Julian nodded.

"I know."

"If this becomes public..."

"It will."

Every head turned.

Melissa frowned.

"You intend to release it?"

"I intend to tell the truth."

"The media will destroy her."

Julian's expression never changed.

"I won't be destroying anyone."

He looked toward the frozen image on the television.

"Her own actions will."

The head of security placed another folder on the table.

"We completed our preliminary search."

Julian opened it.

"What did you find?"

"There are additional recordings."

Vanessa shut her eyes.

"No..."

Security chief Daniel Brooks continued.

"The abuse escalated whenever you traveled."

Julian gripped the folder tighter.

Daniel swallowed.

"Sir..."

"There is something else."

"What?"

"We recovered deleted files."

Julian looked up.

"Deleted?"

"Miss Carter believed she erased them from the internal server."

He slid a flash drive across the table.

"Our technicians restored everything."

Vanessa felt her stomach twist.

Deleted videos.

The ones she'd recorded herself.

Not to remember.

To laugh at.

Daniel connected the flash drive.

Another recording appeared.

This one wasn't from the home's security system.

It had been filmed vertically on Vanessa's own phone.

She was smiling directly into the camera.

"People always ask how I stay so patient."

She turned the phone.

Elena stood in a corner, trembling.

Vanessa whispered with a laugh,

"The trick is making them too scared to misbehave."

She deliberately stopped recording before slapping the child.

The board members stared in disbelief.

Another video.

Vanessa and two friends sat drinking champagne.

One of the women asked,

"Does Julian suspect anything?"

Vanessa laughed.

"He worships me."

"What about the kid?"

"I've almost broken her."

Laughter filled the recording.

Vanessa covered her face.

"No..."

Another clip.

"If Elena disappears into boarding school next year, Julian will be completely mine."

Another.

"Once we're married, I'll convince him to update his will."

Another.

"One little signature..."

She smiled at the camera.

"...and the Thorne fortune becomes my retirement plan."

The video ended.

No one spoke for nearly a full minute.

Finally...

Arthur Whitmore stood.

He had worked beside Julian's father.

He had watched Julian grow from an ambitious young businessman into one of the country's most respected CEOs.

His voice carried the weight of decades.

"Miss Carter."

She slowly looked up.

"The Thorne family welcomed you."

Silence.

"They trusted you."

Silence.

"They intended to make you one of them."

His eyes hardened.

"You treated that privilege like a hunting license."

Vanessa suddenly pointed at Elena.

"She's lying!"

The room froze.

"She manipulated all of you!"

Even Detective Mason looked stunned.

"She's always hated me!"

Elena shrank behind Mrs. Alvarez.

Julian finally lost the last fragment of restraint.

"Enough."

The single word thundered through the mansion.

"You've blamed a six-year-old child for your crimes."

He stepped forward.

"You blamed stress."

Another step.

"You blamed discipline."

Another.

"You blamed editing."

Another.

"And now..."

He stood directly before her.

"...you blame the victim."

Vanessa instinctively stepped backward.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

Attorney Richard Cole entered carrying another envelope.

"It has been completed."

Julian accepted it.

"What is it?" Vanessa whispered.

Julian opened the envelope.

Inside were several legal notices.

He handed them to her.

She stared at the first page.

NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF ENGAGEMENT AGREEMENT

The second.

REVOCATION OF ALL FINANCIAL AUTHORIZATIONS

The third.

PERMANENT TRESPASS NOTICE

Her hands began shaking.

The fourth.

CIVIL ACTION FOR DAMAGES

The fifth.

A petition seeking reimbursement for every expense Julian had ever paid on her behalf that involved fraud or misrepresentation.

Luxury vacations.

Jewelry obtained through deception.

Personal assistants.

Designer purchases charged to company accounts.

Her face turned white.

"You're suing me?"

Julian answered calmly.

"I'm recovering what belongs to my daughter."

Just then, Mrs. Alvarez quietly approached Julian.

"Sir..."

He turned.

"What is it?"

She handed him a small folded piece of paper.

"I found this tucked inside Miss Elena's pillowcase while packing a hospital bag."

Julian unfolded it carefully.

It was written in crooked six-year-old handwriting.

The letters were uneven.

Some words were misspelled.

But every sentence pierced his heart.

Dear Mommy in Heaven,

I try to be good.

Maybe if I'm better she won't be mad.

Please tell Daddy I'm trying.

I don't want him to stop loving me.

Julian's vision blurred.

A single tear landed on the paper.

He folded it with trembling hands and slipped it into his jacket pocket.

Over his heart.

He looked at Vanessa one last time.

"You didn't just hurt my daughter."

His voice broke for the first time.

"You convinced her that my love had conditions."

He drew a slow breath.

"For that..."

"There is no forgiveness."

At that exact moment, Detective Mason's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen, then looked up at Julian.

"The forensic team just finished examining Miss Carter's bedroom."

Julian frowned.

"Did they find anything?"

Mason's expression grew grim.

"They found a locked safe."

"And inside..."

May you like

He paused.

"...is evidence that may turn this from child abuse into something even more disturbing."
