CHAPTER 3: The Empire Strikes Back

CHAPTER 3: The Empire Strikes Back
Vanessa's knees nearly gave out.
Six hours.
Not six minutes.
Not one unfortunate misunderstanding she could twist into a story about "discipline."
Six hours of methodical cruelty.
Every slap.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Every calculated smile she wore whenever the staff looked away.
Gone.
She forced herself to breathe.
Think.
Survive.
This wasn't over.
It couldn't be.
She had spent years building this life.
The designer gowns.
The charity galas.
The magazine interviews about becoming "the perfect future Mrs. Thorne."
The mansion.
The private jet.
The foundation that carried her smiling face across every social media platform.
Everything rested on one thing—
Julian believing her.
That illusion had just collapsed.
"Julian..."
She stepped toward him, careful to make her voice tremble.
"I made mistakes."
He didn't answer.
"I was overwhelmed."
Silence.
"I've been planning our wedding for months. The pressure..."
Still nothing.
"I never meant to hurt Elena."
The little girl instinctively hid behind her father's leg.
That single movement said more than any confession.
Julian looked down.
His daughter was shaking.
Not because she had been caught doing something wrong.
Because she believed he might leave her alone with Vanessa again.
The realization broke something inside him.
He crouched.
"You never have to be afraid again."
Elena looked at him uncertainly.
"Promise?"
Julian pressed his forehead gently against hers.
"I swear on your mother's memory."
The child burst into tears.
This time, they weren't tears of fear.
They were tears of relief.
Detective Mason quietly approached.
"The physician has documented multiple injuries."
Julian nodded.
"I want photographs."
"They're already being taken."
"I want every room searched."
"We've started."
Vanessa spun toward the detective.
"You can't just invade my privacy!"
Mason's eyes narrowed.
"This isn't your house."
She opened her mouth.
Closed it again.
An officer appeared from upstairs carrying a small cardboard box.
"Detective."
"What did you find?"
The officer placed the box on the marble table.
Inside were dozens of items.
A tiny stuffed rabbit with one ear ripped off.
Children's drawings.
A broken music box.
A pair of pink ballet slippers.
Julian frowned.
"Those belong to Elena."
Elena's eyes grew wide.
"Bunny..."
She reached toward the rabbit.
"I was looking for him."
Julian stared at Vanessa.
"You told me Elena had lost these."
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
"I..."
Another officer entered.
"We found them locked inside Miss Carter's dressing room closet."
Silence.
Julian slowly picked up one of the drawings.
It showed three people holding hands.
A father.
A little girl.
A woman with long hair.
His late wife.
Across the drawing, someone had written in thick black marker:
SHE'S DEAD. GROW UP.
Elena buried her face against Julian's chest.
"I didn't write that."
"I know."
His voice cracked.
"I know you didn't."
Dr. Harris carefully wrapped Elena's burned hands in soft bandages.
"She'll heal."
Julian looked hopeful.
"Completely?"
The doctor's hesitation answered first.
"The skin will recover."
"And emotionally?"
A long silence.
"That depends."
"On what?"
"Whether she feels safe now."
Julian closed his eyes.
Safe.
The one thing he had promised his dying wife.
The one promise he had failed to keep.
The family attorney arrived carrying a leather briefcase.
"Mr. Thorne."
Julian motioned toward his study.
"Inside."
Vanessa tried following.
Julian stopped her without turning around.
"You stay here."
"Julian, I'm your fiancée."
"No."
His voice was ice.
"You were."
Inside the study, attorney Richard Cole spread several folders across the desk.
"I've already begun reviewing the prenuptial agreement."
Julian looked up.
"Burn it."
Cole blinked.
"Sir?"
"There won't be a wedding."
"I assumed as much."
Julian leaned back.
"What does she legally own?"
Cole opened another folder.
"Almost nothing."
Julian frowned.
"Explain."
"The mansion remains entirely yours."
"The investment accounts?"
"Yours."
"The trust?"
"Yours."
"The cars?"
"Registered under Thorne Holdings."
Julian nodded once.
"The jewelry?"
Cole gave a faint smile.
"Most of it is on permanent loan through your family office."
Julian almost laughed.
Vanessa had spent three years pretending to be queen of an empire she never actually possessed.
Legally...
She owned little more than the clothes hanging in her closet.
Meanwhile, downstairs...
Vanessa finally snapped.
She grabbed Elena by the arm.
"This is your fault!"
An officer immediately stepped between them.
"Ma'am."
She yanked her hand away.
"I wasn't going to hurt her."
"No."
The officer answered calmly.
"But you don't get to touch her again."
Elena instinctively moved closer to the housekeeper, Mrs. Alvarez.
The elderly woman wrapped an arm around the little girl.
"It's all right now."
Mrs. Alvarez had worked for the Thorne family for twenty-eight years.
She had suspected.
She had worried.
But every bruise had an explanation.
Every cry stopped before Julian came home.
Now she silently cursed herself for not seeing the truth sooner.
The study door opened.
Julian emerged.
Behind him came Richard Cole carrying several legal documents.
Julian looked directly at Vanessa.
"The engagement is over."
She laughed nervously.
"No."
"It wasn't a request."
"You can't end everything because of one bad day."
Julian stared at her.
"One day?"
He nodded toward Detective Mason.
Mason handed him a thick folder.
"What is that?"
"The preliminary report."
Julian flipped through page after page.
Medical photographs.
Staff statements.
Security logs.
Time stamps.
Then he looked up.
"This wasn't one day."
He tossed the folder onto the coffee table.
It landed open.
Vanessa saw dates.
Different dates.
Weeks.
Months.
Nearly two years.
Her heart stopped.
"The cameras..."
Julian answered quietly.
"I upgraded the entire security system eighteen months ago."
Her mouth fell open.
"But you said—"
"I said the visible cameras were decorative."
He stepped closer.
"I never mentioned the hidden ones."
Color drained from Vanessa's face.
Hidden.
There had been hidden cameras.
Not just in the foyer.
The hallways.
The playroom.
The library.
The kitchen.
The garden.
Everywhere except bedrooms and bathrooms.
She suddenly remembered dozens of moments.
Every cruel comment.
Every punishment.
Every threat whispered when she believed no one could hear.
Recorded.
Archived.
Timestamped.
Julian looked at Detective Mason.
"How much have you reviewed?"
"Only about twenty percent."
"And?"
The detective's expression hardened.
"I've already documented enough evidence to support multiple felony charges."
Vanessa whispered,
"No..."
Mason continued.
"Child abuse."
"Criminal intimidation."
"Unlawful confinement."
"Destruction of personal property."
The list kept growing.
Each charge landed like another brick sealing her fate.
Julian walked to the fireplace.
Above it hung the largest portrait in the mansion.
A professionally painted image of himself...
Vanessa...
and Elena.
The picture-perfect family.
He stared at it for a long moment.
Then lifted it from the wall.
Without hesitation—
CRASH!
The canvas struck the marble floor.
The frame splintered into dozens of pieces.
Glass exploded across the room.
Everyone jumped.
Julian looked at the shattered portrait.
"There."
He turned toward Vanessa one final time.
"Now the picture matches reality."
Behind him, the butler quietly approached.
"Sir."
Julian nodded.
"Yes?"
"The board of Thorne International has arrived."
Vanessa frowned.
"The board?"
The butler answered before Julian could.
"They came as soon as they received the emergency notification."
Julian looked toward the mansion's front entrance, where black luxury cars were pulling into the circular driveway one after another.
"The family matter is over," he said.
"Now..."
May you like
His eyes locked onto Vanessa's.
"...comes the business meeting that will erase you from every corner of my world."
