CHAPTER 6: THE GIFT SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO GIVE

CHAPTER 6: THE GIFT SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO GIVE
An hour later...
The donor suite was ready.
Sophie sat on the examination bed swinging her little legs.
She looked more interested in the cartoon stickers on the wall than the medical equipment surrounding her.
A pediatric nurse smiled.
"Are you nervous?"
Sophie shook her head.
"No."
"Not even a little?"
She thought for a moment.
"I don't like needles."
"Most people don't."
"But Mommy says brave people can be scared."
The nurse smiled warmly.
"Your mommy is very wise."
Across the observation window, I watched every movement.
Dominic had insisted on being wheeled into the adjoining recovery room despite his condition.
He couldn't donate strength.
He could barely sit upright.
But he refused to let his daughter face this alone.
Dr. Kim approached him.
"You shouldn't be here."
"I've already missed six years."
His eyes never left Sophie.
"I'm not missing another minute."
Inside the room, Sophie looked through the glass.
She saw Dominic watching her.
She waved enthusiastically.
He lifted a weak hand and waved back.
The simple gesture shattered him.
He had imagined this moment thousands of times over the last hour.
But reality hurt more.
She smiled at him without resentment.
Without fear.
Without knowing everything he had done.
She still believed people deserved kindness.
That innocence made his guilt unbearable.
The nurse prepared the IV.
Sophie squeezed a small stuffed rabbit against her chest.
"Will Daddy feel better today?"
The question caught everyone off guard.
The nurse glanced toward me.
I nodded.
"Yes."
"I hope he gets to come home soon."
Dominic covered his mouth.
Tears filled his eyes again.
He whispered,
"You don't owe me this."
Sophie couldn't hear him through the glass.
She simply looked up at me.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"If Daddy gets better..."
She hesitated.
"...can we read him bedtime stories too?"
The room fell completely silent.

Even the nurses looked away to hide their emotions.
I walked into the donor room and knelt beside her.
"Why do you want to do that?"
She shrugged.
"Because sick people get lonely."
I hugged her tightly.
So tightly she giggled.
"I can't breathe, Mommy."
"I'm sorry."
"No."
She smiled.
"I like hugs."
The transfusion began.
A thin red line slowly carried Sophie's blood into a sterile collection bag.
Minutes later...
That same blood began flowing into Dominic's IV.
Father and daughter.
Separated for six years.
Connected at last by the very thing no lie could erase.
Blood.
Family.
Truth.
Dr. Kim watched the monitors carefully.
After several tense minutes...
Dominic's blood pressure began to stabilize.
His heart rhythm strengthened.
Internal oxygen levels climbed.
She smiled for the first time that day.
"It's working."
A quiet sigh spread through the medical team.
Dominic looked through the glass at Sophie.
She was holding up two tiny thumbs.
He laughed through tears.
Then he made a silent promise only he could hear.
I can't undo the first six years.
But if you ever let me...
I'll spend the rest of my life earning the right to be your father.
Just as hope finally returned...
The television mounted in the waiting room interrupted its programming with a breaking news bulletin.
The headline flashed across every screen.
CASTELLANO HOLDINGS BOARD CALLS EMERGENCY MEETING—CEO DOMINIC CASTELLANO FACES REMOVAL AS NEW EVIDENCE EMERGES.
Vanessa stared at the screen in shock.
"What new evidence?"
Before anyone could answer, her phone rang.
She looked at the caller ID.
It was the company's Chief Legal Officer.
She answered.
Thirty seconds later...
The phone slipped from her fingers.
Dominic looked at her.
"What happened?"
Vanessa's face had turned completely white.
May you like
She whispered only one sentence.
"They found your father's signature... on every forged document."
