CHAPTER 5: THE ARREST THAT SHOOK THE CASTELLANO EMPIRE

CHAPTER 5: THE ARREST THAT SHOOK THE CASTELLANO EMPIRE

The ICU doors slid open.

Every conversation stopped.

Two detectives from the New York Police Department entered, followed by a woman in a navy suit carrying a leather briefcase.

The older detective removed his badge.

"Mrs. Eleanor Castellano?"

Lady Eleanor slowly turned, her expression calm despite the tension filling the room.

"I am Eleanor Castellano."

The detective stepped forward.

"I'm Detective Michael Hayes."

He held up an official document.

"We have a warrant for your arrest."

The words echoed through the ICU.

Vanessa gasped.

Dr. Kim instinctively stepped between the detectives and Dominic's hospital bed.

"This is an intensive care unit."

"We understand," Hayes replied respectfully. "We'll keep this as brief as possible."

Lady Eleanor didn't move.

"There must be some mistake."

The younger detective placed a thick evidence box on the counter.

"There isn't."

He opened the lid.

Inside were old photographs.

Financial records.

Computer hard drives.

Several cell phones.

And a faded manila folder labeled:

MORRISON DIVORCE INVESTIGATION.

My knees nearly gave out.

Dominic stared at the folder as if it were a ghost.

"What... is that?"

Detective Hayes looked at him.

"Three weeks ago, a former employee of Castellano Holdings contacted our office."

He opened another file.

"He confessed to participating in a conspiracy ordered by your grandmother."

Dominic's face drained of color.

"What conspiracy?"

The detective spoke carefully.

"The photographs used during your divorce."

My heartbeat thundered.

"They were digitally fabricated."

Silence.

"They were created by a private security consultant hired through a shell corporation."

He handed another document to Dominic.

"The consultant has already confessed."

Dominic read the statement with trembling hands.

Every word was another knife.

Paid to follow Isabelle Morrison.

Unable to find evidence of infidelity.

Ordered to manufacture photographs.

Paid an additional $250,000 to falsify reports.

Dominic looked up slowly.

"No..."

Detective Hayes nodded.

"It gets worse."

He opened another folder.

"The DNA report that claimed your unborn child belonged to another man."

He paused.

"It never existed."

Vanessa whispered,

"What?"

"The laboratory named in the report confirmed they never issued such a document."

The detective's voice hardened.

"It was entirely forged."

Dominic closed his eyes.

His breathing became uneven.

Every memory from six years earlier replayed itself.

His grandmother's certainty.

His father's silence.

The lawyers.

The accusations.

And Isabelle...

Begging him to believe her.

"I trusted you..."

he whispered without looking at Eleanor.

"I trusted you more than my own wife."

Lady Eleanor finally spoke.

"I did what had to be done."

Dominic looked at her in disbelief.

"You admit it?"

"I protected this family."

"You destroyed it!"

"I prevented a scandal."

"There never was a scandal!"

"There would have been."

"No!"

His voice echoed through the ICU.

"There was only love."

He turned toward me.

"And I murdered it."

Tears streamed down his face.

"I murdered our family."

The detectives stepped toward Eleanor.

"Mrs. Castellano, you're under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction of justice, evidence tampering, and multiple related offenses."

She straightened her pearl necklace.

"You have no idea who you're arresting."

Hayes calmly replied,

"No, Mrs. Castellano."

He clicked the handcuffs into place.

"We know exactly who we're arresting."

For the first time in nearly fifty years...

The woman who controlled one of New York's wealthiest families walked through a hospital hallway wearing handcuffs.

Hospital staff stopped to stare.

Doctors whispered.

Patients pulled out phones.

Within minutes...

The impossible had happened.

News alerts began appearing across New York.

CASTELLANO MATRIARCH ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Dominic watched silently as the elevator doors closed behind his grandmother.

Then he turned toward me.

"I destroyed six years..."

His voice cracked.

"...because I chose the wrong person to trust."

I didn't answer.

Some wounds were too deep for words.
