CHAPTER 3: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 3: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING

No one answered.

Not because they didn't know the truth anymore.

Because no adult in that room knew how to explain six years of lies to a six-year-old child whose entire world still believed monsters only lived in fairy tales.

Sophie looked around the ICU with wide golden eyes.

She noticed my tears first.

Then the strange woman in the cream dress.

Then the pale man sleeping beneath a maze of tubes and machines.

Finally, she looked back at me.

"Mommy..."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"Why is everyone crying?"

I forced myself to kneel in front of her.

My hands shook as I brushed a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.

"No one's hurt, sweetheart."

"But you always cry when you're hurt."

Children noticed everything.

Every smile that wasn't real.

Every word adults thought they hid.

She reached up and wiped a tear from my cheek with her little thumb.

"Is he my daddy?"

The question echoed through the silent room.

Vanessa slowly backed away until she hit the wall.

Dr. Rachel Kim quietly motioned every nurse to leave.

The ICU suddenly felt much smaller.

I couldn't lie anymore.

Not after the DNA report.

Not after fate had dragged every secret into the light.

I swallowed.

"Yes."

One word.

Barely audible.

But it changed all of our lives.

Sophie's eyes became enormous.

"My daddy?"

I nodded.

"The one sleeping?"

Another nod.

She looked at Dominic for a very long time.

Long enough for everyone else to stop breathing.

Then she asked the question that shattered me.

"Did he know about me?"

Silence.

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the truth was cruel.

"No," I whispered.

"He didn't."

"Why?"

I closed my eyes.

How do you explain betrayal to a child?

How do you tell her that the man lying unconscious once believed she could never exist?

Before I could answer, a weak voice came from the hospital bed.

"...Isabelle?"

Every head snapped toward Dominic.

His fingers twitched.

The heart monitor accelerated.

Dr. Kim rushed forward.

"Mr. Castellano? Can you hear me?"

His eyelids fluttered.

Slowly...

Painfully...

They opened.

His vision was blurred.

The medication still clouded his mind.

He looked around the room in confusion.

Then he saw me.

For one impossible second...

His face softened exactly the way it had six years ago.

"Belle..."

The old nickname.

The one no one had called me since the divorce.

Then his eyes shifted.

Toward Sophie.

Toward the little girl standing beside me.

Golden eyes met golden eyes.

Dominic frowned.

His breathing became uneven.

He stared.

And stared.

As if looking into a mirror six years in the past.

"...Who..."

His voice cracked.

"...who is she?"

No one answered.

Vanessa began crying quietly.

The DNA report still lay open on the floor.

Dominic noticed it.

Then he noticed everyone's faces.

Then he looked back at Sophie.

She smiled shyly.

"Hi."

His chest rose sharply.

Something inside him already knew.

"She..."

He struggled to breathe.

"...looks familiar."

Dr. Kim stepped closer.

"You shouldn't talk."

But Dominic ignored her.

His eyes never left the child.

"How old are you?"

"Six."

"What... what's your name?"

"Sophie."

He repeated it.

Almost to himself.

"Sophie..."

Then he looked at me.

His expression slowly changing from confusion...

...to fear.

"...Belle..."

"What..."

His voice shook violently.

"...what is happening?"

I picked up the DNA report.

Walked to his bedside.

Placed it into his trembling hand.

"You wanted the truth."

He looked down.

His eyes scanned the first page.

Then the second.

Then the highlighted sentence.

Probability of biological paternity: 99.9998%.

The color drained from his face.

"No."

He kept reading.

"No..."

His hands started shaking uncontrollably.

"This..."

His breathing became ragged.

"This isn't possible."

I finally spoke the words I had buried for six years.

"She has always been yours."

The report slipped from his fingers.

His entire body froze.

Then he looked at Sophie again.

Really looked.

The smile.

The eyes.

The tiny dimple in her left cheek.

The way she tilted her head when she was confused.

His own childhood photographs flashed through his mind.

His mother's old family albums.

Pictures he had seen a thousand times.

The resemblance was undeniable.

"Oh God..."

His voice broke.

"Oh...

...God..."

Tears spilled down his face.

"I..."

He couldn't finish.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Everything he believed...

Everything his family had convinced him...

May you like

Everything that had destroyed our marriage...

Had been a lie.
