CHAPTER 4: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE SIX YEARS

CHAPTER 4: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE SIX YEARS
Dominic cried.
Not quietly.
Not with dignity.
He cried with the raw, broken sound of a man watching his own life collapse around him.
"I had..."
He gasped for air.
"...a daughter?"
I didn't answer.
Sophie looked at me.
"Mommy..."
"Why is Daddy crying?"
The word hit Dominic harder than any injury from the crash.
Daddy.
She had said it naturally.
Without resentment.
Without fear.
Simply because I had told her the truth.
His shoulders shook.
"I missed..."
His voice disappeared.
"I missed everything."
First steps.
First words.
First birthday.
First day of school.
First lost tooth.
Every bedtime story.
Every fever.
Every nightmare.
Every Christmas morning.
Gone.
Gone forever.
Because one lie had stolen six years.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"I didn't know."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked devastated.
"I swear to God..."
She covered her mouth.
"I never knew."
Dominic stared at her.
"You..."
His voice hardened.
"...you knew about Isabelle."
"I knew you had an ex-wife."
"Did you know my grandmother accused her of cheating?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"I..."
"Answer me."
"Yes."
"Did you ever question it?"
"I trusted your family."

Dominic laughed bitterly.
"The worst mistake anyone could make."
At that moment the ICU doors opened again.
An elderly woman entered surrounded by two security guards.
Lady Eleanor Castellano.
Even at eighty-one she carried herself like royalty.
Perfect posture.
Perfect pearls.
Perfect control.
Until she saw Sophie.
She stopped walking.
Her face lost every trace of color.
"No..."
she whispered.
"It can't be."
Dominic slowly turned his head toward her.
For the first time in his life...
He looked at his grandmother not with admiration...
...but with suspicion.
"You knew."
It wasn't a question.
Lady Eleanor recovered quickly.
"This isn't the time."
"You knew."
"I was protecting this family."
"From what?"
She remained silent.
"From my wife?"
"From scandal."
Dominic's voice rose despite the pain.
"Scandal?"
"You forged evidence."
"You destroyed my marriage."
"You stole my daughter."
Lady Eleanor's expression hardened.
"I saved the Castellano name."
"No."
His eyes burned with fury.
"You destroyed it."
The room fell silent.
For decades, no one had ever spoken to Eleanor Castellano that way.
Not her son.
Not her lawyers.
Not the board of directors.
Certainly not Dominic.
She took one slow step forward.
"You are alive because of your family."
Dominic pointed toward Sophie.
"No."
His voice was steady now.
"I am alive because of my daughter."
Another silence.
Then Sophie walked toward the hospital bed.
Everyone instinctively moved to stop her.
Dominic lifted a trembling hand.
"No."
She climbed carefully onto the chair beside him.
She studied his bruised face with heartbreaking curiosity.
"You look sick."
He laughed through tears.
"I am."
"Mommy says my blood can help."
"It can."
"Then I'll share."
Dominic's lips trembled.
"You don't even know me."
Sophie smiled with the simple wisdom only children possess.
"You don't have to know someone to help them."
The sentence struck every adult in the room like lightning.
Dominic broke completely.
He covered his face and sobbed.
Because the little girl he had unknowingly abandoned...
...had inherited her mother's heart.
And despite everything he had done...
She was still willing to save his life.
At that exact moment, outside the ICU, two detectives stepped out of the elevator carrying sealed evidence boxes.
One of them asked the receptionist,
"Which room is Mr. Dominic Castellano in?"
The receptionist pointed toward the ICU.
"What is this regarding?"
May you like
The detective answered with seven words that would soon destroy one of New York's most powerful families.
"We have a warrant for Eleanor Castellano's arrest."
