CHAPTER 7 — THE CHRISTMAS AUCTION

CHAPTER 7 — THE CHRISTMAS AUCTION

Michael didn't scream.

He didn't panic.

Years of building an empire had taught him one lesson:

Panic clouds judgment.

But inside, he was falling apart.

He picked up Kelly's teddy bear.

Tucked inside its worn fabric was a folded note.

Only six words.

"Come alone if you love her."

Beneath the message was an address.

The Vaughn Foundation Children's Gala.

Michael looked at Director Holloway.

"I'm going."

"No."

"It's a trap."

Michael's eyes never left the note.

"I know."

"They have my daughter."

That evening, New York's wealthiest families filled the ballroom of the Vaughn Foundation.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled.

An orchestra played Christmas classics.

Television cameras broadcast the charity gala live across the country.

At the center of it all stood Arthur Vaughn.

Smiling.

Shaking hands.

Accepting praise for "saving thousands of children."

Michael walked through the front doors alone.

Exactly as instructed.

Arthur welcomed him warmly.

"Michael."

"So glad you could make it."

"You kidnapped my daughter."

Arthur smiled without blinking.

"Such an ugly word."

"She's merely... ensuring your cooperation."

Michael wanted to hit him.

Instead, he waited.

He needed Kelly alive.

Arthur leaned closer.

"Your partner David made one mistake."

"He became greedy."

"So I removed him."

Michael stared.

"You killed David?"

Arthur nodded casually.

"Yesterday."

Michael realized the hospital assassin hadn't been working for David.

David himself had become disposable.

The real mastermind had always been Arthur Vaughn.

Meanwhile...

Detective Brooks ignored Michael's instructions.

She led an FBI tactical team through the underground levels beneath the charity building.

Hidden behind a wine cellar...

They discovered a biometric security door.

Inside...

Rows of servers.

Medical archives.

DNA samples.

Forgery equipment.

Thousands of files.

Every stolen identity.

Every missing child.

Every illegal payment.

Project AURORA.

The entire operation.

One technician looked up in horror.

"My God..."

"This isn't human trafficking."

"What is it?"

"It's identity laundering."

Children had been selected at birth.

The wealthiest clients secretly replaced biological heirs with infants carrying carefully chosen genetic profiles.

Entire family bloodlines had been manufactured for decades.

Upstairs...

Arthur raised his champagne glass.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"I have one final Christmas surprise."

The ballroom lights dimmed.

A massive screen illuminated.

Michael's heart stopped.

Kelly.

She was tied to a chair inside a warehouse.

Alive.

Terrified.

"Daddy..."

Arthur smiled at the horrified guests.

"No need to worry."

"This is merely a demonstration."

He handed Michael a pistol.

"One bullet."

"One choice."

Michael stared.

Arthur pointed toward Grace, who had just been dragged into the ballroom by armed guards.

"Either Grace dies..."

"...or Kelly does."

Gasps spread through the room.

Television cameras continued broadcasting live.

Arthur wanted the world to witness a father's impossible choice.

Grace shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Michael.

"Save Kelly."

Michael slowly accepted the gun.

His hands trembled.

Arthur counted.

"Ten..."

The ballroom fell silent.

"Nine..."

Michael raised the weapon.

Grace closed her eyes.

"Eight..."

Kelly's frightened face filled the screen.

"Seven..."

Michael aimed.

"Six..."

Arthur smiled.

He had won.

Or so he thought.

At "Five"—

Michael suddenly turned...

...and fired straight at the giant crystal chandelier above Arthur's head.

The chain exploded.

Tons of crystal crashed downward.

Chaos erupted.

Lights shattered.

Guests screamed.

Arthur dove aside.

FBI agents burst through every entrance.

May you like

"FBI! DON'T MOVE!"

The gala became a battlefield.
