CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN IN THE BLACKOUT

CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN IN THE BLACKOUT
The emergency lights painted the hospital corridor in flashes of crimson.
Smoke thickened by the second.
Patients cried.
Nurses shouted room numbers.
Somewhere, glass shattered.
Michael shoved Kelly behind him.
"Stay with Detective Brooks. Don't move."
Kelly clutched Teddy against her chest.
"Daddy..."
"I'll be back."
Grace had already reached Noah's incubator when a dark figure burst through the smoke.
He wore maintenance overalls, a respirator mask, and a hospital ID badge.
Fake.
Michael knew it instantly.
The man grabbed the incubator.
Grace threw herself over it.
"NO!"
The stranger drove an elbow into her shoulder.
She crashed against the wall.
The incubator rolled toward the exit.
Michael sprinted.
Years behind a desk hadn't erased the instincts he'd learned growing up with a Marine father.
He tackled the man before he reached the stairwell.
Both men slammed into the tile floor.
The incubator tipped sideways.
A nurse caught it just before it overturned.
The masked man reached inside his jacket.
Detective Brooks shouted.
"Gun!"
A suppressed pistol appeared.
Before the assassin could fire—
BANG!
Another shot echoed through the corridor.
Not from the killer.
From Detective Brooks.
The bullet struck the gunman's shoulder.
His weapon skidded across the floor.
Instead of surrendering...
He laughed.
A deep, chilling laugh.
"You people still don't understand."
Then he bit down hard.
Michael saw blood spill from the corner of the man's mouth.
"Cyanide!" Brooks yelled.
Doctors rushed over.
Too late.
Within seconds the assassin was dead.
No fingerprints.
No identification.
No answers.
Only one object remained.
A metal key attached to a leather tag.
Locker 317.
Grand Central Station.
Three hours later...
Detective Brooks stared at the evidence bag.
"A dead hitman."
"A fake hospital fire."
"And now a locker key."
Michael looked toward Noah's room.
"There has to be something inside."
Brooks nodded.
"But if David sent him..."
"...he already knows we're looking."
That evening, the station assigned plainclothes officers around the hospital.
Michael refused to leave.
Kelly slept curled up beside Noah's crib, her little hand resting against the red scarf she'd given away on Christmas Eve.
Grace watched them quietly.
"I've never seen a child love someone she just met."
Michael smiled.
"Kelly thinks everyone deserves one person who believes in them."
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"I stopped believing that a long time ago."
Michael looked at her.
"Then borrow Kelly's faith until yours comes back."
For the first time since they'd met...
Grace smiled.
Only for a second.
But it was real.
At dawn...
Detective Brooks, Michael, and two FBI agents entered Grand Central Station.
Locker 317 sat untouched.
Brooks inserted the key.
The door creaked open.
Inside was a single black backpack.
Nothing else.
The FBI bomb technician carefully unzipped it.
No explosives.
Instead...
Stacks of passports.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
Dozens.
Every document belonged to infants born over the past five years.
Different names.
Different families.
Different hospitals.
One thing connected every file.
Every child had been delivered at St. Anne's Women's Medical Center.
Michael frowned.
"What is this?"
Then Brooks pulled out a thick folder.
PROJECT AURORA
LEVEL OMEGA
CLASSIFIED
Inside were payment records worth over $480 million.
Illegal adoption contracts.
DNA reports.
Photographs of newborn babies.
Michael's stomach turned.
Someone had been stealing infants.
Selling identities.
Replacing medical records.
Building entirely new lives for children who disappeared before anyone realized they were gone.
But then Brooks reached the last page.
Her face went white.
"No..."
Michael grabbed the document.
At the top was Noah's photograph.
Underneath...
