CHAPTER 3 — THE FLASH DRIVE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 3 — THE FLASH DRIVE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Michael stood frozen in the hospital corridor.
The flash drive felt impossibly heavy in his palm.
"...David Carter?" he whispered.
Grace nodded once.
"I didn't know his real name until later."
Michael's heart pounded.
David Carter wasn't just his business partner. He had been his closest friend for nearly fifteen years. Together they had built Bennett Hospitality into one of New York's most successful luxury hotel groups. David had attended Sarah's funeral. He had bought Kelly birthday presents every year. He knew everything about Michael's life.
"This doesn't make sense."
Grace looked at him with exhausted eyes.
"That's exactly what I told myself."
Before Michael could ask another question, two police officers approached the waiting area.
"Mrs. Miller?"
Grace immediately stiffened.
"They're here to take Noah."
One officer spoke gently.
"We only need to ask a few questions after the hospital reported signs of previous injuries."
Grace's face lost all color.
"I didn't hurt my son."
"You'll have every opportunity to explain."
She looked desperately toward Michael.
For a brief second, he hesitated.
Every piece of evidence pointed toward her.
A homeless mother.
An injured infant.
No witnesses.
Then he remembered something Sarah used to say.
"Fear makes innocent people look guilty."
Michael stepped between Grace and the officers.
"I'll answer any questions with her."
The older officer recognized him.
"Mr. Bennett?"
"She's not alone."
The officers exchanged glances but nodded.
An hour later, Michael sat inside a small consultation room with Detective Elena Brooks.
"So," she began, "why would a billionaire hotel owner involve himself in this?"
"Because something doesn't fit."
Grace carefully placed the flash drive on the table.
"This explains everything."
Detective Brooks plugged it into her laptop.
The first video appeared.
The footage came from a hidden nanny camera inside a small apartment.
The timestamp showed six weeks earlier.
Grace appeared on screen, rocking Noah to sleep before leaving for her night shift at a diner.
Ten minutes later, a man unlocked the apartment using his own key.
His face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.
He searched every drawer.
Every cabinet.
Then Noah began crying.
The man walked over to the crib.
Instead of comforting the baby...
He grabbed Noah roughly by one arm.
The detective immediately paused the video.
"Oh my God..."
Grace burst into tears.
"I never saw this until after we escaped."
Michael felt sick.
The detective continued playing.
The man spoke softly enough for the hidden microphone to capture every word.
"You should've kept your mouth shut, Grace."
Then he smiled.
"I warned your mother."
Michael's blood turned cold.
"What happened to her mother?"
Grace lowered her head.
"House fire."
"When?"
"Three months ago."
The detective looked up sharply.
"Accidental?"
Grace laughed bitterly.
"That's what they called it."
The second video revealed the man's face as he removed his cap.
Michael stopped breathing.
David Carter.
There was no mistake.
No doubt.
His oldest friend stood calmly inside Grace's apartment.
Kelly's favorite "Uncle David."
The man Michael had trusted with hundreds of millions of dollars.
Detective Brooks slowly closed the laptop.
"This changes everything."
Michael could barely speak.
"...Why?"
Grace reached into her backpack and removed a worn envelope.
"My husband worked for David."
Inside were payroll records.
Company documents.
Bank transfers.
One document caught Michael's attention immediately.
Project AURORA.
Bennett Hospitality Holdings.
Confidential.
Michael frowned.
"I've never seen this."
Grace looked surprised.
"You own the company."
"I should've seen every project."
Detective Brooks flipped through the papers.
"The signatures are forged."
Michael's stomach tightened.
David hadn't just betrayed him.
He had been secretly running something inside Michael's own company.
Something worth hurting a baby to protect.
That evening Michael returned to his penthouse.
Kelly ran into his arms.
"Is baby Noah okay?"
"He'll need to stay in the hospital for a while."
She looked relieved.
"Can I give him Teddy tomorrow?"
Michael smiled sadly.
"I think he'd like that."
After Kelly went to bed, Michael entered his private office.
He opened his safe.
Every confidential partnership file was exactly where he had left it.
Except one.
Project AURORA.
The folder was missing.
Someone had already been there.
Then his office phone rang.
Unknown number.
Michael answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A familiar voice spoke calmly.
"Still helping strangers, Michael?"
His heart stopped.
David.
"You've made a terrible mistake."
Michael remained silent.
David chuckled.
"You watched the videos."
"So you know."
"What do you want?"
"I want you to stop asking questions."
"You hurt a baby."
"No."
David's voice became frighteningly cold.
"I protected a fortune."
Then the line went dead.
Michael looked toward Kelly's bedroom upstairs.

For the first time since Sarah died...
He felt genuine fear inside his own home.
