CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T LET GO

CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T LET GO

The heater inside the SUV blasted warm air, but Grace never relaxed.

She sat curled against the door, Noah locked so tightly against her chest that his tiny cries were muffled beneath Kelly's red scarf.

Every few seconds she glanced at the locks.

The windows.

The rearview mirror.

The exits.

Like an animal that had survived too many traps.

Kelly quietly climbed onto the seat beside her.

"My teddy keeps me warm," she whispered, holding out a worn brown bear. "He can help Noah too."

Grace stared.

No one had offered her anything without wanting something in return for a very long time.

Her lips trembled.

"...Thank you."

Kelly smiled.

"My mommy says..." She stopped, correcting herself the way she always did after Sarah died.

"My daddy says sharing makes things less scary."

Michael tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

For a second he couldn't breathe.

Five minutes later the SUV pulled beneath the covered entrance of the Harrison Grand Hotel.

The doorman hurried outside.

"Mr. Bennett—"

Michael cut him off.

"Call Dr. Patel. Right now."

The man's eyes shifted toward Grace.

Toward the torn clothes.

Toward the barefoot woman stepping onto polished marble with snow still melting from her hair.

His expression changed.

Not concern.

Judgment.

"Sir... guests are checking in. Perhaps the service entrance—"

Michael's voice became ice.

"They enter through the front."

The lobby fell silent.

Several wealthy guests paused with expensive luggage halfway across the floor.

A little boy in designer boots pointed.

"Mommy... why is that lady dirty?"

His mother immediately pulled him away.

Grace lowered her head.

"I knew this was a mistake."

She turned toward the door.

Michael stepped in front of her.

"No."

"I'm making everyone uncomfortable."

"You are not the problem."

His words echoed through the marble lobby.

"The problem is that people can look at a freezing baby and worry more about appearances than survival."

Nobody spoke.

The doorman slowly lowered his eyes.

Within minutes Dr. Patel arrived carrying an emergency bag.

He didn't ask who Grace was.

He knelt immediately beside Noah.

The baby's skin was frighteningly cold.

His breathing came in short, rattling bursts.

The doctor's smile disappeared.

"Michael..."

One word.

That was all it took.

Michael's stomach tightened.

"Tell me."

"We're losing time."

Grace's face drained of color.

"No..."

"He has severe hypothermia."

The doctor gently touched Noah's tiny fingers.

"They're barely perfusing."

Grace looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..." Dr. Patel swallowed.

"If we don't get him to the hospital now..."

He never finished.

He didn't have to.

Grace screamed.

It wasn't loud.

It was worse.

A broken sound that seemed torn straight from somewhere no human voice should reach.

"No! Please! Not my baby! Please..."

She collapsed onto the marble floor, clutching Noah against her chest.

"They already took everything else..."

Her words dissolved into sobs.

"You can't take him too..."

The ambulance arrived seven minutes later.

Michael rode with them.

Kelly sat in the front beside the paramedic, clutching her teddy bear so tightly one button eye nearly popped off.

Grace never stopped whispering.

"I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry."

Over and over.

As though apologizing could keep Noah alive.

At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, doctors rushed Noah behind double emergency doors.

Grace tried to follow.

A nurse blocked her.

"You need to wait."

"No!"

"My baby—"

"You'll interfere."

Grace fought like someone drowning.

Michael caught her before security reached her.

"It's okay."

"No!" she cried, pounding weak fists against his chest.

"They'll think I'm a bad mother!"

"They'll take him!"

"They always take babies from women like me!"

The hallway became painfully quiet.

Michael looked into her terrified eyes.

"Who told you that?"

She froze.

For several long seconds she said nothing.

Then...

"My husband."

Michael frowned.

"I thought you said Noah's father was gone."

"He is."

She laughed bitterly.

"He disappeared after they finished ruining my life."

"They?"

Grace's breathing became uneven.

Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.

"I shouldn't have said anything."

"Grace..."

"He worked for very powerful people."

"What people?"

Her eyes darted toward every security camera in the hallway.

Toward every stranger passing.

As if someone were listening.

Then she whispered four words.

"They're still looking."

Michael felt a chill that had nothing to do with winter.

"Looking for who?"

She stared directly into his eyes.

"For Noah."

Before Michael could ask another question...

The emergency room doors burst open.

Dr. Patel hurried toward them.

His face was pale.

Too pale.

Michael already knew.

"No..."

The doctor looked at Grace first.

Then slowly removed his glasses.

"We stabilized his breathing."

Grace collapsed with relief.

But Dr. Patel wasn't finished.

"However..."

Michael's heartbeat stopped.

"The scans found something."

"What?"

The doctor hesitated.

"There is an old fracture on Noah's left arm."

Grace gasped.

"What?"

"And bruising on his ribs."

Michael looked at her in disbelief.

"You said no one touched him."

"I didn't know!"

She was crying again.

"I swear I didn't know!"

The doctor continued quietly.

"Some of these injuries happened weeks ago."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Michael searched Grace's face.

Was she lying?

Had he brought an abusive mother into his daughter's life?

Grace saw the doubt.

It shattered her.

She slowly backed away.

Even from Michael.

Even from Kelly.

"You think I hurt him..."

Nobody answered.

She nodded as tears streamed down her frozen cheeks.

"I knew..."

"I knew no one would ever believe me."

She reached into the pocket of her soaked sweater.

Her trembling fingers pulled out a small silver flash drive wrapped carefully inside a plastic sandwich bag.

"I was trying..."

"...to keep this alive."

Michael stared.

"What is it?"

Grace looked toward the ICU doors.

Then back at him.

"If anything happened to me..."

"This was supposed to reach the police."

Michael took the flash drive.

"It proves who really hurt Noah."

His pulse quickened.

"Who?"

Grace whispered one name.

And Michael felt every drop of blood leave his face.

"...Your business partner."

The flash drive slipped in Michael's trembling hand.

May you like

Because the name Grace had just spoken...

...was the same man who had been sitting beside him at Christmas dinner only three nights earlier.
