CHAPTER 7 — The Investigation

CHAPTER 7 — The Investigation

Vanessa stared at the detectives as though they had appeared out of thin air.

"There must be some mistake."

The older detective, Sergeant Michael Torres, remained calm.

"We're not placing you under arrest."

"We're requesting your cooperation."

Celeste pushed past her daughter.

"My attorney will contact you."

Torres nodded politely.

"That's your right."

He opened the folder in his hands.

"We've received multiple financial complaints filed this afternoon."

"Several involve companies connected to wedding vendors."

Celeste's confidence wavered.

"What complaints?"

"A pattern of unpaid personal loans."

"False financial statements."

"And documents submitted during recent investment applications."

Vanessa slowly looked toward her mother.

"You handled all of that."

Celeste forced a smile.

"Don't panic."

"It's routine."

But Daniel's name appeared on the first page of the report.

Not as the complainant.

As a witness.

He had simply provided copies of contracts after investigators contacted him to verify ownership of the wedding payments.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The following morning...

News channels covered two stories.

The canceled wedding.

And the investigation into Celeste Brooks' financial dealings.

The internet connected them immediately.

Comment sections filled with speculation.

Some defended Vanessa.

Most didn't.

Meanwhile, Daniel ignored every interview request.

He returned to work.

Inside Carter Global Holdings, his executive team applauded as he entered the boardroom.

He stopped them immediately.

"This isn't a victory."

"It's a lesson."

One executive asked,

"Will we release a public statement?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"The facts already speak."

Across town...

Vanessa packed boxes in silence.

Luxury handbags.

Designer shoes.

Jewelry.

Most had been purchased on credit.

Several payment deadlines had already passed.

She sat on the floor holding one framed engagement photo.

Daniel had looked at her with absolute trust.

She barely recognized the woman smiling beside him.

Her younger sister entered quietly.

"You should eat."

"I'm not hungry."

After several minutes, the sister finally asked,

"Did you ever love him?"

Vanessa's answer came almost as a whisper.

"I think..."

"I loved what he could give me."

The truth hurt more than any headline.

For the first time, she understood that greed had slowly replaced affection.

Not overnight.

Choice by choice.

Until she no longer noticed the difference.

That evening...

Celeste was formally charged with several financial offenses related to fraudulent investment disclosures and forged documentation submitted to obtain private funding.

Vanessa wasn't charged.

Investigators found no evidence that she had participated in those financial schemes.

But her reputation had already collapsed.

Sometimes the court of public opinion delivered its own sentence.
