CHAPTER 4 — The Empty Aisle

CHAPTER 4 — The Empty Aisle

Saturday morning arrived beneath clear blue skies.

Television crews gathered outside the cathedral.

Luxury cars lined the street.

Influencers filmed videos in front of the entrance.

Guests admired the floral displays.

Everyone agreed on one thing.

This would be the wedding of the season.

Vanessa arrived thirty minutes late.

Exactly as planned.

She wanted everyone waiting for her.

A white Rolls-Royce should have been waiting outside.

Instead...

the driveway was empty.

She frowned.

"Where's my car?"

The coordinator looked confused.

"We were told transportation had changed."

"What?"

Before anyone could answer, a standard black sedan pulled up.

Vanessa stared.

"Is this a joke?"

The driver simply opened the door.

"We're already behind schedule, ma'am."

Furious but unwilling to appear flustered, she climbed inside.

When the car reached the cathedral...

Something felt wrong.

There was no orchestra.

No photographers.

No excited crowd rushing toward her.

Just silence.

The massive wooden doors stood open.

Inside...

every guest was already seated.

Facing the altar.

Waiting.

Vanessa smiled.

Perfect.

She adjusted her veil.

"This is my moment."

The music should have started.

It didn't.

She began walking anyway.

Each step echoed through the cathedral.

One.

Two.

Three.

She reached the altar.

Then stopped.

Daniel wasn't there.

The priest wasn't there.

There were no groomsmen.

No best man.

No father of the groom.

Nothing.

Only an enormous LED screen hanging behind the altar.

"What is this?" she demanded.

The wedding planner looked down.

"I...I don't know."

Celeste marched forward.

"Where is Daniel?"

No one answered.

Then...

The cathedral doors slowly closed behind them.

A click echoed through the room.

The lights dimmed.

The giant screen flickered to life.

White letters appeared against a black background.

"Some weddings begin with vows.

This one begins with the truth."

A ripple of confusion spread through the audience.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Daniel, enough games."

Then the first video began.

Crystal-clear security footage.

The bridal boutique.

Ruth standing quietly beside the gowns.

Vanessa reaching out...

And shoving the seventy-four-year-old woman onto the marble floor.

Gasps erupted across the cathedral.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

The speakers filled with Vanessa's own voice.

"Get up and hold my gown."

"You're here to serve me."

Then came the laughter.

Her sister laughing.

Celeste laughing.

The sound echoed through the cathedral like a verdict.

Vanessa's face turned white.

"No..."

She looked around desperately.

"That's edited!"

But the timestamp.

The multiple camera angles.

The uninterrupted recording.

It was impossible to deny.

Guests who had smiled at her only minutes earlier now stared in disbelief.

An elderly woman in the front row quietly wiped away tears.

One of the bridesmaids covered her face.

Another stood up and walked out.

Vanessa screamed,

"Turn it off!"

Nobody moved.

The screen faded briefly...

Then another recording began.

This time from champagne night.

Her own voice rang through the speakers.

"Eventually, all his companies will belong to me."

Celeste's voice followed.

"I raised you well."

The cathedral fell into absolute silence.

Then came the first slow clap.

Not from a guest.

From the back of the church.

Every head turned.

Daniel had arrived.

Standing beside Ruth.

His mother held her cane with quiet dignity.

Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.

May you like

For the first time since proposing...

there wasn't a trace of love left in his eyes.
