CHAPTER 6 — The Price of Cruelty

CHAPTER 6 — The Price of Cruelty
As Daniel and Ruth walked toward the cathedral doors, two uniformed security officers stepped inside.
They approached Vanessa respectfully.
"Miss Brooks."
She looked up with swollen eyes.
"What now?"
"The venue has been legally closed."
"We're here to escort you and your family from the property."
Celeste exploded.
"You can't remove us!"
One officer calmly handed her a document.
"The reservation was canceled yesterday by the contract holder."
She snatched the paper.
At the bottom...
Only one signature appeared.
Daniel Carter.
Celeste stared at it in disbelief.
"You... canceled everything?"
Daniel stopped near the doorway.
"I canceled the wedding."
"I didn't cancel the truth."
Without another word, he walked outside beside Ruth.
The sunlight felt strangely peaceful.
Across the street...
Television cameras rushed toward them.
"Mr. Carter!"
"Did your fiancée assault your mother?"
"Is the wedding officially over?"
"Are the videos authentic?"
Daniel raised one hand.
"I'm not here to attack anyone."
He glanced at Ruth.
"My mother spent her life teaching me that dignity matters."
He looked back at the reporters.
"Today isn't about revenge."
"It's about refusing to reward cruelty."
He declined every additional question and helped Ruth into the waiting car.
The vehicle drove away.
Leaving the reporters chasing a story that was already spreading across the country.
Inside the cathedral...
Vanessa's phone wouldn't stop vibrating.
Messages poured in faster than she could read them.

She opened social media.
Millions of views.
Thousands of comments.
The video was everywhere.
People weren't talking about her wedding dress.
They were talking about the old woman she pushed onto the floor.
Vanessa dropped into a chair.
"This isn't fair..."
Her sister looked at her.
"Maybe..."
she said quietly,
"...it is."
Celeste shot her a furious glare.
"Don't start."
But no one defended Vanessa anymore.
Not even her own family.
That evening...
Daniel sat on the porch outside Ruth's small home.
The sun was setting.
Neither of them spoke for a long time.
Finally Ruth broke the silence.
"You could have ruined them completely."
Daniel nodded.
"I know."
"But you didn't."
He smiled faintly.
"I only showed people what they chose to hide."
Ruth rested her hand on his.
"I'm proud of you."
Daniel looked toward the horizon.
For weeks, he had imagined this day bringing satisfaction.
Instead...
he felt something unexpected.
Relief.
The anger was gone.
The lies were over.
And for the first time in a long while...
he was finally free.
Far across the city, however, Vanessa sat alone in her dark penthouse apartment, staring at the engagement ring box she no longer possessed.
She believed the nightmare had reached its end.
She was wrong.
Because before midnight...
someone knocked on her door.
When she opened it, two detectives were waiting outside.
"Miss Vanessa Brooks?"
"Yes..."
"We need to ask you several questions regarding allegations of financial fraud and conspiracy connected to your family's recent business dealings."
Vanessa's face turned white.
"What...?"
One detective opened a folder.
"This conversation would be easier if you came with us."
The elevator doors slid open behind them.
May you like
Vanessa suddenly realized...
losing the wedding had only been the beginning.
