CHAPTER 5 — The Truth Walks Down the Aisle

CHAPTER 5 — The Truth Walks Down the Aisle

The slow clap echoed through the cathedral.

Every pair of eyes turned toward Daniel.

He stood beside Ruth, one hand resting lightly on her shoulder. She wore a simple navy-blue dress instead of the elegant gown Vanessa had insisted she buy weeks earlier.

Daniel wasn't smiling anymore.

He walked calmly toward the altar.

Each step sounded louder than the last.

Vanessa felt her heartbeat hammer against her ribs.

"Daniel..." she whispered. "Please... tell them this is some kind of misunderstanding."

He stopped several feet away.

"No."

The word landed like a stone.

Celeste forced herself forward.

"How dare you humiliate my daughter like this!"

Daniel looked at her.

"Humiliate?"

His voice remained steady.

"You laughed while my seventy-four-year-old mother lay on the floor."

Celeste opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel faced the guests.

"I owe everyone here an apology."

Confused murmurs spread through the cathedral.

"I invited you to celebrate a marriage."

He paused.

"Instead, you've witnessed the reason it will never happen."

The giant screen came alive again.

This time it displayed receipts.

Invoices.

Bank transfers.

One after another.

The audience watched as each vendor contract appeared with a single signature.

Daniel Carter.

The venue.

The florist.

The orchestra.

The honeymoon.

The luxury hotel.

The limousine company.

The wedding planner.

Every invoice had already been paid.

A stunned silence settled over the room.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

"No..."

Celeste's face drained of color.

"You told everyone..." Daniel said quietly, "...that your family paid for this wedding."

He pressed a button on the remote.

A document appeared.

DECLINED CREDIT CARD TRANSACTION

Then another.

And another.

Dates.

Amounts.

Merchant names.

The truth was impossible to ignore.

"I paid every deposit," Daniel continued.

"I covered every expense."

"I never corrected the story because I didn't care who received the credit."

He looked directly at Vanessa.

"But after what you did to my mother..."

"I decided everyone deserved the truth."

A voice rose from the second row.

"You lied to all of us?"

It was one of Vanessa's bridesmaids.

Another guest stood.

"So we were invited to a wedding you didn't even pay for?"

Someone else muttered,

"Unbelievable."

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

"Daniel, please..."

"You can't destroy my life over one mistake."

Daniel's expression never changed.

"One mistake?"

He pointed toward the screen.

The boutique footage replayed.

Vanessa shoving Ruth.

Her mocking smile.

The laughter.

Then another clip appeared.

Champagne night.

"Eventually... everything Daniel owns becomes ours."

"He trusts me."

"Exactly how we planned."

The words echoed through the cathedral.

Guests who had once admired Vanessa now looked at her with open disgust.

One by one, people began leaving their seats.

No shouting.

No chaos.

Just disappointment.

The wedding of the year was ending before it had even begun.

Outside...

News crews noticed guests pouring from the cathedral.

Cameras turned toward the entrance.

Microphones appeared.

People whispered to one another.

"What happened?"

"Did someone die?"

"Why is everyone leaving?"

Within minutes, short video clips from inside the church began appearing online.

Someone had recorded the screen.

Another had captured Vanessa screaming.

The internet moved faster than anyone expected.

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

"You planned this."

"Yes."

"You wanted revenge."

"No."

He gently removed her hand.

"I wanted accountability."

"That's not the same thing."

For the first time, Vanessa began to cry.

Real tears.

Not because she regretted hurting Ruth.

Because she realized she had lost everything.

"You still love me..."

she whispered desperately.

Daniel looked at the engagement ring on her finger.

"I loved the woman I thought you were."

His voice softened.

"I don't know the woman standing in front of me."

He reached into his pocket.

"May I have the ring back?"

Vanessa froze.

Slowly...

her fingers trembled as she removed it.

Daniel accepted it without looking down.

"Thank you."

May you like

He turned away.

There was nothing left to say.
