CHAPTER 5 — THE SILENCING ATTEMPT

CHAPTER 5 — THE SILENCING ATTEMPT
Daniel replayed the twelve-second video five times.
The prison guard's face was unmistakable.
His name badge read Officer Kevin Morris.
Richard Whitmore slipped a thick envelope into the guard's jacket pocket before walking away.
Then came the chilling order.
"If she starts talking... make sure she never leaves prison alive."
Detective Harris immediately called the state corrections bureau.
"No one goes near Vanessa Carter without authorization. Lock down her wing. Now."
The response came too late.
Twenty-three minutes earlier...
Vanessa had collapsed inside her cell.
Another inmate had screamed for help after finding her unconscious on the floor.
Foam gathered at the corner of Vanessa's mouth.
A plastic cup lay beside her bed.
Doctors at the prison infirmary identified traces of a powerful sedative mixed with industrial cleaning chemicals.
Someone had tried to make her death look like a suicide.
But she survived.
Barely.
By evening, Vanessa had been transferred under heavy police guard to the same hospital where Daniel's mother was recovering.
She awoke restrained to the bed, an officer stationed outside her room.
The door opened.
Detective Harris entered first.
Daniel followed.
Vanessa looked at him with bloodshot eyes.
"You think I deserve this."
Daniel didn't answer.
She laughed bitterly.
"I do."
For a long moment, silence filled the room.
Then she whispered the words no one expected.
"They were going to kill me."
Harris pulled out a recorder.
"Who?"
"Richard Whitmore."
"And Michael Grant?"
Vanessa nodded weakly.
"They've been stealing from Carter Global for years."
Daniel stared at her.
"You expect me to believe you now?"
"I don't care whether you believe me."
Tears slid down her face.
"I only want to stay alive."
Vanessa's statement lasted nearly three hours.
She admitted everything.
How Whitmore had introduced her to Daniel at a charity gala six years earlier.
How Michael had coached her on Daniel's routines, habits, and weaknesses.
How she had been instructed to gain Daniel's trust, encourage him to expand overseas, and gradually isolate him from his family.
But somewhere along the way, the plan had changed.
"I started spending money."
She looked down.
"More than they approved."
"So they blackmailed you."
She nodded.
"They recorded everything."
Every expensive handbag.
Every hidden affair.
Every illegal transfer.
Every forged signature.
Whitmore had kept detailed files on all of them.
"You abused my mother."
Daniel's voice was cold.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I know."
"There is no excuse."
"There isn't."
For the first time since their marriage had fallen apart, Daniel believed she was telling the truth.
Not because she deserved sympathy.
Because fear had finally stripped away every lie.
While detectives took Vanessa's formal statement, another team raided one of Whitmore's private offices downtown.
The building appeared almost empty.
Too empty.
Someone had cleaned it out only hours before.
Computers were gone.
Hard drives removed.
Cabinets emptied.
One detective cursed.
"We're late."
But an evidence technician noticed something unusual.
Fresh plaster covered one section of the wall.
He knocked.
It sounded hollow.
Minutes later, officers smashed through the drywall.
Behind it sat a hidden steel safe.
Inside were passports under different names.
Stacks of foreign currency.
A satellite phone.
And a black ledger.
Every page contained handwritten payments.
Judges.
Customs officials.
Shipping inspectors.
Corporate executives.
Even politicians.
The corruption reached farther than anyone had imagined.
Then they found one final entry.
A payment authorized only two days earlier.
Operation Final Witness.
Recipients:
Kevin Morris.
Unknown Female.
Cash: $500,000.
Detective Harris stared at the page.
"They weren't planning one murder."
"They were planning two."
Daniel immediately understood.
"My mother..."
Harris nodded.
"And Elena."
Across town, two unmarked SUVs stopped outside the hospital.
Four people wearing medical uniforms stepped out carrying emergency equipment.
They approached the nurses' station.
"We're transferring Mrs. Margaret Carter."
The nurse frowned.
"I wasn't informed."
The man produced official-looking paperwork.
"It's classified."
Something felt wrong.
The nurse picked up the phone.
Before she could dial, one of the supposed paramedics quietly locked the reception door.
Another reached beneath the stretcher.
Not for medical equipment.
For a suppressed pistol.
At that exact moment, Elena walked out of Daniel's mother's room carrying an empty soup container.
She froze.
The man's eyes met hers.
Neither moved.
Then he whispered into his radio.
"Target confirmed."
Everything exploded into motion.
"Run!" Elena screamed.
She shoved the soup cart across the hallway just as the first gunshot shattered the fluorescent lights.
Patients screamed.
Doctors dropped to the floor.
Hospital alarms blared.
The fake paramedics rushed toward Margaret Carter's room.
But Elena threw herself into their path.
One attacker struck her hard across the face with the pistol.
She crashed into the wall but refused to move.
"No!"
She grabbed the attacker's arm with both hands.
Another gunman raised his weapon—
A deafening shout echoed through the corridor.
"Police! Drop your weapons!"
Detective Harris's protection team, already stationed on the floor, opened fire.
The hallway erupted into chaos.
Two attackers were shot before reaching the room.
A third fled toward the emergency stairwell.
The fourth grabbed Elena as a human shield.
"Back off!"
Blood trickled from Elena's forehead.
She stared directly at Daniel, who had just stepped out of the elevator.
For one terrifying second, time seemed to stop.
The gunman pressed the pistol against Elena's temple.
Daniel's voice was steady.
"Let her go."
The man smiled.
"Throw your gun away."
"I don't have one."
"Then watch her die."
Before anyone could react—
A frail voice came from inside the hospital room.
"Leave... my daughter... alone."
Everyone turned.
Margaret Carter had somehow pulled herself out of bed.
Still weak from her injuries, she stood trembling in the doorway, holding the heavy metal IV stand with both hands.
The gunman laughed.
"You should've stayed in bed, old woman."
He never saw the IV stand swing.
With surprising strength, Margaret slammed it into his shoulder.
The pistol flew across the floor.
Elena broke free.
Detectives tackled the attacker a split second later.
The hallway fell silent except for the sound of sirens and heavy breathing.
Daniel caught his mother before she collapsed.
She smiled faintly.
"I finally... defended someone."
He hugged her tightly, unable to speak.
But across the city, inside a private hangar, Richard Whitmore watched news coverage of the failed assassination.
His assistant hurried toward him.
"Sir, the police recovered one of the attackers alive."
Whitmore's expression darkened.
"Prepare the jet."
"Where are we going?"
Whitmore looked out at the runway.
May you like
"Somewhere without an extradition treaty."
As the engines roared to life, neither man noticed the small GPS tracker that had been magnetically attached beneath the aircraft only minutes earlier... by an undercover federal agent.
