CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH
Daniel barely slept.
Michael's final words echoed through his mind.
"There are names on that server... that powerful people will kill to keep hidden."
At six the next morning, Detective Harris arrived at the hospital carrying a thick case file.
"We searched Michael Grant's office last night."
Daniel looked up.
"And?"
"We found shredded documents, encrypted hard drives, and nearly three million dollars in offshore accounts."
"Anything connecting him to Vanessa?"
Harris nodded.
"More than we expected."
He placed several photographs on the table.
Vanessa and Michael were seen entering luxury hotels together.
Meeting with unknown businessmen.
Exchanging briefcases.
One image froze Daniel's blood.
It showed Michael leaving Daniel's own house late at night.
The date was only two weeks after Daniel had departed for Saudi Arabia.
"He was in my home..."
Harris answered quietly.
"More than thirty times."
Daniel closed his eyes.
His marriage had not simply fallen apart.
It had become the headquarters of a conspiracy.
Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone in county jail.
For the first time, no expensive lawyer was standing beside her.
Her previous attorney had withdrawn after discovering she had concealed crucial evidence.
The heavy steel door opened.
A man in an expensive charcoal suit entered.
He was in his early sixties.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
Cold blue eyes.
Vanessa immediately stood.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Richard Whitmore—the billionaire investor who owned nearly twenty percent of Carter Global Holdings.
He remained expressionless.
"You've made an extraordinary mess."
"I didn't know Daniel had hidden cameras."
"You were told never to underestimate him."
Vanessa swallowed.
"I can still fix this."
Whitmore gave a humorless smile.
"You cannot even save yourself."
She leaned closer to the glass.
"Please get me out."
Instead, he slid a single envelope across the table.
Inside was a one-way plane ticket.
Not for Vanessa.
For her eight years earlier.
The date she had first met Daniel.
Confused, she looked up.
"What is this?"
"A reminder."
Whitmore's voice was calm.
"You were never supposed to fall in love."
Vanessa's face turned pale.
"You... you knew from the beginning?"
"I introduced you to Daniel for one purpose."
His words struck like hammer blows.
"To gain access to his company."
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.
The marriage...
The romance...
The lavish wedding...
Had all started as part of a corporate scheme.
"I didn't mean for any of this to happen," she whispered.
Whitmore's eyes hardened.
"But you became greedy."
He stood.
"And greedy people become liabilities."
As guards escorted him away, he paused without turning around.
"If the police ask about me..."
"...remember that accidents happen in prison."
The door slammed shut.
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
For the first time, she realized she had never been a partner.
She had always been disposable.
That afternoon, Elena prepared soup for Daniel's mother in the hospital room.
His mother smiled weakly.
"You've been taking care of everyone except yourself."
Elena laughed softly.
"I'm used to it."
"No."
The elderly woman reached into the bedside drawer.
She removed a small velvet jewelry box.
"This belonged to my husband."
Inside rested a delicate gold necklace with a tiny sapphire cross.
"I wanted my daughter to wear it someday."
Tears filled Elena's eyes.
"I can't accept this."
"You already have."
Confused, Elena looked at her.
"My son chose well when he hired you."
Daniel had stopped outside the room once again.
He watched Elena kneel beside his mother, gently fastening the necklace around her neck only after the older woman insisted.
There was no greed.
No hesitation.
Only gratitude.
For the first time in months, Daniel saw his mother genuinely smile.
Later that evening, Daniel met Detective Harris in the police cybercrime unit.
Specialists were decrypting the final folders from the surveillance server.
Most contained footage of Vanessa's abuse.
Then one analyst frowned.
"Sir..."
"You should see this."
The screen displayed video from Camera Seven.
A hidden camera overlooking Daniel's private study.
The timestamp was 1:43 a.m.
Michael entered first.
Behind him came Richard Whitmore.
Then Vanessa.
Whitmore placed a thick folder on Daniel's desk.
Inside were acquisition contracts bearing forged signatures.
Michael spoke first.
"Once Daniel signs these, Carter Global becomes ours."
Whitmore smiled.
"He won't know what he signed."
Vanessa laughed.
"He signs anything I put in front of him."
Daniel's face hardened.
"I never signed those."
The analyst zoomed in.
Everyone leaned toward the screen.
Whitmore removed a transparent folder containing dozens of practice sheets.
Each page was covered with copies of Daniel's signature.
They had been practicing forging his handwriting for months.
Detective Harris immediately ordered the video preserved as evidence.
"Forgery. Corporate espionage. Organized fraud."
He looked at Daniel.
"This case just became federal."
Before anyone could speak again, another file opened automatically.
It was recorded only four nights before Daniel returned home.
The three conspirators were arguing violently.
Michael slammed his fist onto the desk.
"We're running out of time!"
Whitmore's expression remained icy.
"Then eliminate the problem."
Vanessa frowned.
"What problem?"
Whitmore looked directly toward the hallway leading to Daniel's mother's bedroom.
"The old woman."
Silence filled the cybercrime lab.
Then Whitmore added four words that chilled everyone.
"Dead witnesses tell nothing."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
His mother had never been abused merely out of cruelty.
Someone had wanted her dead.
And if Elena had not stood between them...
They might already have succeeded.
Detective Harris immediately picked up his phone.
"I want protective custody around Mrs. Carter and Elena twenty-four hours a day."
As officers rushed into action, Daniel's encrypted server emitted another alert.
New file detected.
The upload had not come from his house.
It had come from an anonymous phone.
Attached was a single twelve-second video.
The footage showed Richard Whitmore speaking with a uniformed prison guard outside Vanessa's cell.
The audio contained only one sentence.
"If she starts talking..."
May you like
"...make sure she never leaves prison alive."
