CHAPTER 3 — THE TRAITOR INSIDE THE COMPANY

CHAPTER 3 — THE TRAITOR INSIDE THE COMPANY
The notification flashed across Daniel's phone just after 2:17 a.m.
Unauthorized access attempt detected.
He stared at the screen.
Someone wasn't trying to break into his house.
They were trying to erase the evidence stored on his private surveillance server.
The attempt had failed.
But the digital fingerprint remained.
Daniel opened the network log.
One IP address.
One device ID.
One employee login.
His jaw tightened.
Michael Grant.
His own Chief Financial Officer.
His friend for nearly twelve years.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
"No..."
Daniel whispered.
Then he checked again.
The login wasn't stolen.
It required Michael's physical security key and biometric verification.
There was no mistake.
Michael had personally attempted to destroy the recordings.
By sunrise, Daniel had made three phone calls.
The first went to the company's cybersecurity director.
"I want every system mirrored immediately. No one deletes a single file without my approval."
The second was to the firm's outside legal counsel.
"I need emergency preservation orders for all financial records from the last twelve months."
The third call was to Detective Harris.
"I think this assault case is connected to corporate fraud."
There was a long silence.
"What did you find?"
Daniel took a slow breath.
"My wife didn't act alone."
Meanwhile...
Vanessa sat in a holding cell wearing the same designer clothes she had arrived in.
She still believed money would save her.
Her lawyer leaned closer through the interview glass.
"The assault charge is serious."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"My husband always forgives me."
"Not this time."
She laughed.
"You don't know Daniel."
"No," the lawyer replied quietly.
"But I know evidence."
Before he could continue, another attorney entered.
She handed him a thick folder.
His face changed instantly.
"What is it?"
He opened the file.
Every page contained still images from Daniel's hidden cameras.
Dates.
Times.
Medical reports.
Photographs of bruises.
Audio transcripts.
The lawyer slowly removed his glasses.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"What?"
"...you lied to me."
Across town, Elena sat outside the intensive care unit.
Her stitches pulled every time she smiled at Daniel's mother.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I should've called the police sooner."
Daniel's mother squeezed her hand.
"You kept me alive."
Elena lowered her eyes.
"I promised your son."
"You never even met him."
"I didn't have to."
She smiled sadly.
"You talked about him every day."
Daniel had stopped outside the door.
He heard every word.
His chest tightened.
For months, this young woman had protected his mother while expecting nothing in return.
She could have resigned.
She could have walked away.
Instead...
She stayed.
Every bruise on her body proved it.
Later that afternoon, Daniel arrived at Carter Global Holdings without announcing his return.
The lobby fell silent.
Employees exchanged nervous glances.
Most believed he was still overseas.
Michael hurried from his office with an enormous smile.
"Daniel!"
He reached out for a handshake.
Daniel looked at his hand.
Then walked past him.
"Boardroom."
Michael laughed awkwardly.
"Sure. What's going on?"
"You'll see."
Ten minutes later, every executive sat around the polished walnut table.
Daniel remained standing.
He connected his laptop to the giant screen.
"I've been reviewing company finances."
Michael nodded confidently.
"Everything's in excellent shape."
"Really?"
Daniel clicked the remote.
A spreadsheet appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
Millions of dollars transferred through shell companies.
Luxury purchases disguised as consulting fees.
Private flights billed as overseas inspections.
Michael cleared his throat.
"There must be an accounting explanation."
Daniel clicked again.
A photograph filled the screen.
Michael and Vanessa.
Together.
Holding champagne glasses aboard a yacht.
The timestamp showed two months earlier.
While Daniel was working in the Saudi desert.
The room fell completely silent.
Michael's face drained of color.
Daniel's voice became ice.
"You told everyone my wife visited me overseas."
Michael swallowed.
"I..."
"You filed travel reimbursements."
"I can explain."
"You forged my approval."
"It wasn't what it looks like."
Daniel pressed another key.
Security footage from the company's underground parking garage appeared.
Vanessa climbed into Michael's car.
They kissed.
Several executives gasped.
One director pushed his chair back.
"My God..."
Daniel looked directly into Michael's eyes.
"Were you stealing my company before you started sleeping with my wife..."
"...or afterward?"
Michael finally snapped.
"You were never here!"
His fist slammed onto the table.
"You lived in airports, oil fields, and boardrooms!"
"You left her alone!"
"You left your mother with us!"
Daniel didn't raise his voice.
"I trusted you."
Michael laughed bitterly.
"You trusted everyone."
"No."
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
"I trusted the cameras."
He placed a thick stack of documents on the table.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Wire transfers.
Signed approvals.
Every page carried Michael's electronic signature.
"You stole almost eighteen million dollars."
Michael stared in disbelief.
"How..."
"You taught me accounting."
Daniel answered quietly.
"You forgot..."
"I built the systems that record everything."
At that exact moment, two detectives entered the boardroom.
Detective Harris held an arrest warrant.
"Michael Grant?"
Michael slowly stood.
"Yes."
"You are under arrest for conspiracy, financial fraud, destruction of evidence, and obstruction of a criminal investigation."
The executives watched in stunned silence as officers handcuffed the company's CFO.
Michael turned one last time.
"You think this is over?"
Daniel didn't blink.
"It isn't."
Michael smiled strangely.
"You've only found the people you know about."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Michael leaned closer before officers pulled him away.
"There are names on that server..."
"...that powerful people will kill to keep hidden."
The boardroom doors closed.
Silence settled over the company.
Daniel looked down at the encrypted server notification still open on his laptop.
A second failed login attempt had appeared only minutes earlier.
Different location.
Different device.
But the same objective.
Someone else was desperately trying to erase the recordings.
Someone who had not yet been identified.
And Daniel suddenly realized one terrifying fact.
The hidden cameras had captured far more than Vanessa's abuse.
May you like
They had accidentally recorded a criminal network that reached far beyond his own home.
