CHAPTER 2 — THE HIDDEN FOOTAGE

CHAPTER 2 — THE HIDDEN FOOTAGE
The first video began at 7:14 a.m., one hundred and twelve days before Daniel returned home.
He pressed play.
His mother sat quietly at the breakfast table, struggling to butter a piece of toast with her weakened hand. Elena stood beside her, patiently pouring tea.
Vanessa entered wearing silk pajamas, scrolling through her phone.
Without warning, she snatched the plate away.
"You haven't earned breakfast today."
Daniel frowned.
His mother looked up in confusion.
"What... what did I do?"
Vanessa leaned close enough for the hidden microphone to capture every word.
"You breathed."
She dumped the toast into the trash.
His mother lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel's fingers tightened around the laptop until his knuckles turned white.
The footage continued.
Every day followed the same pattern.
Vanessa never hit his mother where bruises could easily be seen.
Instead...
She starved her.
Humiliated her.
Forced her to wait hours before helping her to the bathroom.
Sometimes she disconnected the wheelchair battery so his mother couldn't move from her bedroom.
Sometimes she hid her medication.
Every punishment came with the same cold smile.
"You'll be dead soon anyway."
Daniel stopped the video.
His stomach twisted.
He had spent years building a successful engineering company, believing his wife was caring for the two people he loved most.
Instead...
She had turned his home into a prison.
Then another figure appeared.
A tall man entered through the back door.
Daniel had never seen him before.
He hugged Vanessa.
Not like friends.
Like lovers.
The timestamp showed 10:42 a.m.
Daniel rewound the clip.
Again.
And again.
The man kissed her.
Vanessa laughed.
"The old woman won't remember anything."
The man glanced toward the hallway.
"What about the maid?"
Vanessa smiled.
"I'll deal with her eventually."
Daniel felt every muscle in his body go rigid.
He opened another day's recording.
The same man returned.
Then another.
Sometimes they drank expensive wine from Daniel's collection.
Sometimes they hosted parties while his mother sat locked upstairs without food.
One evening the stranger carried a painting out of Daniel's study.
Another loaded silver antiques into an SUV.
Vanessa watched without concern.
"They're mine now."
Daniel immediately logged into his home's inventory records.
His heart sank.
Nearly four hundred thousand dollars' worth of artwork, jewelry, and collectibles had disappeared during the months he was overseas.
Insurance had never been notified.
Because Vanessa had quietly sold everything herself.
At midnight Daniel drove back to the house.
Police crime-scene tape still stretched across the front entrance after the assault.
He unlocked the bedroom closet.
Inside his mother's wardrobe sat the old blue sewing box Elena had mentioned.
It looked ordinary.
Faded wood.
Scratched corners.
Tiny brass latch.
Daniel opened it.
Inside lay dozens of neatly folded envelopes.
Every one was addressed to him.
"My dear Daniel..."
His mother's handwriting trembled across the first page.
She wrote about the hunger.
The insults.
The nights Vanessa left her alone after falling from the wheelchair.
She apologized repeatedly.
"I didn't tell you because I knew how hard you worked in Saudi Arabia. I didn't want you to lose your project because of me."
Daniel covered his mouth.
There were thirty-eight letters.
None had ever been mailed.
At the bottom of the box rested a small flash drive.
A handwritten note from Elena lay beneath it.
If anything happens to me, please watch this. She checks your mother's room every Friday, but she never found where I hid it.
Daniel inserted the drive into his laptop.
The screen filled with cellphone videos.
Secret recordings.
Elena had filmed everything she safely could.
Vanessa screaming.
Vanessa throwing medication into the trash.
Vanessa forcing Daniel's mother to crawl across the bedroom floor after removing her wheelchair.
One clip ended with Elena crying behind the camera.
"I don't know if Mr. Carter will ever see this... but if I disappear, please believe your mother never lied."
Daniel shut the laptop.
His eyes burned.
Not from tears.
From rage.
The following morning, Vanessa hired the city's most expensive attorney.
She appeared at the police station dressed in white, carrying designer sunglasses and speaking loudly enough for reporters to hear.
"My husband is exhausted after months overseas. He's emotionally overwhelmed. This misunderstanding has been exaggerated by a manipulative employee seeking money."
She even smiled for the cameras.
Inside the interrogation room, Detective Harris folded his arms.
"Mrs. Carter, do you deny striking your mother-in-law yesterday?"
"I lightly corrected her after she became violent."
"And the previous three months?"
Vanessa blinked.
"I don't know what you mean."
The detective slid a tablet across the table.
"Then perhaps you'd like to explain this."
He pressed play.
The hidden camera showed Vanessa dumping an entire tray of medication into the kitchen sink.
Her voice echoed clearly.
"If she dies naturally, nobody can blame me."
The smile disappeared from Vanessa's face.
She stared at the screen.
Then at the detective.
"There must be some mistake."
"There are," Detective Harris replied calmly.
"One hundred and twelve mistakes."
He tapped another folder.
"Actually..."
"...closer to eight thousand video files."
For the first time since Daniel had walked into the kitchen...
Vanessa looked afraid.
She had spent months believing she controlled every corner of the house.
She never imagined the walls themselves had been watching.
And across town, sitting beside his sleeping mother in the hospital, Daniel received an encrypted notification on his phone.
Remote server accessed.
Someone...
...was trying to delete the evidence.
The problem for them was simple.
The person attempting the hack was using an IP address registered to Carter Global Holdings—Daniel's own company.

Which meant the conspiracy was far bigger than his wife.
Someone inside his business had been helping her all along.
