Chapter 6 - The Empire Strikes Back

By sunrise, every major television network in Mexico had gathered outside the hacienda.

Satellite trucks lined the streets.

Reporters crowded behind security barriers.

Inside, Alejandro stood before a long wooden table.

Beside him sat Doña Esperanza in her wheelchair.

Lucía stood at her right.

Marisol stood at her left.

Camila remained several steps behind, silent and ashamed.

Alejandro looked into the cameras.

"My family has hidden the truth for twenty-three years."

"Today..."

"...that ends."

He lifted Rafael's confession.

Then another document.

Then another.

One by one, he exposed decades of corruption.

Names.

Companies.

Secret partnerships.

Illegal acquisitions.

Money laundering.

Every revelation sent reporters scrambling to verify the evidence.

Within an hour, the story dominated every news channel.

Within three hours...

Government investigators announced emergency warrants.

Within five...

Stock prices connected to several corporations collapsed.

Alejandro believed justice had finally begun.

He was wrong.

Because powerful people rarely surrendered quietly.

At 8:47 that evening—

The hacienda lost power.

Every light went dark.

Emergency generators failed simultaneously.

The security system shut down.

The surveillance monitors turned black.

Then...

The first explosion rocked the western wall.

The blast shattered stained-glass windows across the chapel.

Children from nearby staff residences screamed.

The second explosion destroyed the main gate.

Gunfire erupted.

This time...

The attackers weren't trying to intimidate anyone.

They had come to erase every witness.

The security chief shouted into his radio.

"Multiple entry points!"

"They're inside!"

Alejandro grabbed Lucía's hand.

"Take Mother."

"Go to the wine cellar."

Marisol stopped him.

"No."

"They'll expect us there."

She looked toward an old portrait hanging in the hallway.

"Follow me."

She pushed the portrait aside.

Behind it...

A narrow stone staircase descended into darkness.

Alejandro stared.

"I've lived here my entire life."

"I never knew this existed."

Marisol smiled faintly.

"Your grandfather built it during the Revolution."

The family hurried downward.

Behind them, footsteps echoed through the mansion.

The attackers had entered.

Halfway down the tunnel, Doña Esperanza suddenly stopped moving.

She grabbed Alejandro's arm with astonishing strength.

"I remember."

Everyone froze.

Her eyes were completely clear.

Not confused.

Not frightened.

Clear.

She looked directly at Alejandro.

"Your father..."

"...didn't die in the fire."

Silence crashed over the tunnel.

Alejandro's heartbeat stopped.

"What?"

Doña Esperanza whispered the words that changed everything.

"He survived..."

"...and someone in this family helped them find him."

The tunnel fell deathly silent.

Then...

A voice echoed from the darkness ahead.

Slow.

Calm.

Mocking.

"You finally remembered."

A flashlight switched on.

A lone figure stepped from the shadows, blocking the tunnel exit.

The light illuminated his face.

Marisol gasped.

Camila nearly collapsed.

Alejandro stared in disbelief.

May you like

Because the man smiling at them...

Was wearing his dead father's signet ring.
