Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Returned From the Dead

The next morning, Alejandro called an emergency meeting inside the hacienda's library.
Present were only six people.
Alejandro.
Camila.
Lucía.
The family lawyer.
The security chief.
And Doña Esperanza, who remained unusually alert.
On the enormous oak table sat the restored family photograph.
Beside it...
Lucía's childhood photograph.
The resemblance between the little girls was undeniable.
Alejandro spoke first.
"We're done hiding."
He looked toward the lawyer.
"I want every sealed family document."
The lawyer hesitated.
"There are files your father specifically ordered destroyed."
"Destroyed?"
"So he claimed."
"But..."
"You kept copies."
The lawyer lowered his eyes.
"I kept them because someday I believed the truth would matter more than loyalty."
He placed an old envelope onto the table.
Its wax seal had never been broken.
Across the front were the words:
To be opened only if Marisol is ever found.
Everyone stared.
Camila slowly whispered,
"Impossible..."
Alejandro carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Not from his father.
From Doña Esperanza.
Written twenty-three years earlier.
Her voice trembled as Alejandro read aloud.
"If you are reading this, then God has decided our lies can no longer survive."
Lucía felt her pulse race.
"Marisol was never a servant."
"She was my younger sister."
The room exploded into silence.
Lucía looked at Doña Esperanza.
"You had a sister?"
The old woman nodded weakly.
"My baby sister..."
Alejandro continued reading.
"The fire was not an accident."
Camila shut her eyes.
"No..."
Alejandro kept reading.
"Someone set it deliberately."
The lawyer looked stunned.
Even he hadn't known.
"The target was not our home."
"The target was my husband."
Alejandro's hands began trembling.
"My father?"
"Rafael had discovered evidence of massive land theft involving powerful businessmen and politicians."
"They wanted every document destroyed."
The room felt smaller.
Each sentence pulled another stone from the foundation of the family.
"During the fire, Marisol escaped carrying one child."
Alejandro looked up.
His throat tightened.
"Which child?"
Before he could continue...
Doña Esperanza answered herself.
"In the smoke..."
"I couldn't see."
"I heard both girls crying."
"I screamed for Rafael."
"He chose."
Silence.
"He told Marisol..."
"'Take the little one and run.'"
Lucía whispered,
"The little one..."
Doña Esperanza looked at her with overflowing tears.
"That was you."
Lucía staggered backward.
"No..."
"I can't..."
"My mother..."
Doña Esperanza reached for her hand.
"Marisol raised you."
"She loved you."
"But she was never your mother."
Lucía's voice broke.
"Then..."
"Who am I?"
Before anyone could answer—
A deafening explosion shattered every window in the library.
Glass rained across the floor.
The lights went out.
Smoke poured through the broken windows.
Outside...
The estate's front gate erupted into chaos.
The security chief grabbed his radio.
"Armed vehicles!"
"They've breached the entrance!"
Alejandro rushed to the shattered window.
Three black SUVs sped into the courtyard.
Men in tactical gear poured out carrying assault rifles.
One of them shouted through a loudspeaker:
"Hand over the Álvarez files..."
"...or no one leaves this estate alive."
And standing beside the lead vehicle...
Smiling calmly as if she had expected this moment all along...
Was a woman in her late fifties.
Elegant.
Silver-haired.
With piercing green eyes.
Doña Esperanza saw her...
And let out a cry that echoed through the burning silence.
May you like
"Marisol..."
"You... you're alive..."
