Chapter 3 - The Box That Was Never Meant to Be Opened

The words Marisol Álvarez — Confidential hung in the air like a curse.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Lucía's heartbeat pounded so loudly she barely heard the frightened servant repeat himself.
"The vault door wasn't forced, Señor. Whoever entered used a key."
Alejandro's eyes shifted to Camila.
"There were only three keys."
Camila folded her arms.
"Father had one."
"You had one."
"I had one."
Alejandro's voice became dangerously quiet.
"And Father's disappeared after his funeral."
Camila answered without blinking.
"Maybe someone copied it."
Alejandro stepped closer.
"Did they?"
Before she could answer, the estate's security chief hurried into the room carrying a tablet.
"Sir."
He looked unsettled.
"We recovered part of the surveillance footage."
"Show me."
The video began playing.
The timestamp read 8:13 a.m.
A figure wearing a dark maintenance uniform walked calmly toward the underground archive.
Cap.
Face mask.
Gloves.
Nothing unusual.
Until the person stopped beneath the camera.
Very deliberately...
They looked up.
Almost as if they wanted to be seen.
Then they disappeared inside.
Three minutes later they emerged carrying a single weathered wooden box.
Nothing else.
No jewelry.
No cash.
No family contracts.
Only one box.
The recording froze.
Alejandro narrowed his eyes.
"Zoom in."
The technician enlarged the image.
A gold ring flashed briefly beneath the person's glove.
A ring with an emerald surrounded by tiny diamonds.
Lucía noticed it immediately.
"So did Camila.
Her hand instinctively moved behind her back.
The same ring was missing from her finger.
Alejandro noticed.
"So..."
he said softly,
"you lost your ring."
Camila forced a smile.
"I left it upstairs."
"Did you?"
Alejandro extended his hand.
"Show me."
For several long seconds, neither sibling moved.
Finally Camila lifted her hand.
The ring finger was bare.
Her expression hardened.
"This proves nothing."
"No," Alejandro agreed.
"But it proves enough to ask why."
The lawyer quietly slipped toward the door.
"I think perhaps I should—"
"No."
Alejandro stopped him.
"You're staying."
"If my sister has attempted fraud against our mother, you'll be testifying."
The lawyer slowly nodded.
Across the room, Doña Esperanza had fallen silent.
Lucía knelt beside her once again.
The old woman's breathing had steadied.
She stared at a family portrait hanging above the fireplace.
One taken nearly twenty-six years earlier.
Alejandro.
Camila.
Their father, Don Rafael.
Doña Esperanza.
And...
Lucía frowned.
"There was another child."
Everyone looked toward the portrait.
Near the edge of the photograph...
A tiny figure had clearly been cut away.
The edge wasn't smooth.
Someone had physically removed part of the original picture.
Alejandro stared.
"I've never noticed that."
Lucía stood.
"You couldn't."
"The frame hides it."
She carefully removed the portrait from the wall.
Turning it over, she opened the backing.
An older photograph slid free.
Gasps filled the room.
The original image was intact.
Standing beside six-year-old Alejandro...
Holding Doña Esperanza's hand...
Was a little girl of about three.
Dark curls.
Bright smile.
A white ribbon tied in her hair.
The cut marks matched perfectly.
Someone had deliberately erased her from every public copy.
Alejandro whispered,
"Who is she?"
No one answered.
Until...
Doña Esperanza spoke.
"My Sofía."
The room froze.
Alejandro slowly turned.
"Sofía?"
"My sister?"
Tears rolled down the old woman's cheeks.
"They told me..."
"...she burned."
Lucía covered her mouth.
Camila closed her eyes.
Alejandro felt dizzy.
He had never heard the name.
Not once.
Not in childhood.
Not in family stories.
Not in legal documents.
Not anywhere.
His father had erased an entire daughter from history.
That evening, Alejandro ordered every exit to the hacienda locked.
No one would leave.
No one would enter.
Especially not Camila.
She stormed into his office.
"You've lost your mind."
He remained seated behind the massive mahogany desk.
"Sit down."
"I'm not your employee."
"No."
"But you're under investigation."
Her face darkened.
"You can't imprison me."
"I'm protecting Mother."
"From me?"
"From whoever stole those records."
Camila laughed bitterly.
"You think you're uncovering some fairy tale."
"You have no idea what Father did."
Alejandro leaned forward.
"Then tell me."
She looked toward the family crest carved above the fireplace.
"He made impossible choices."
"What choices?"
"He saved one child."
"And abandoned another."
Alejandro's voice cracked.
"What does that mean?"
Camila looked directly into his eyes.
"I was eleven."
"I saw everything."
Then...
She walked out.
Leaving Alejandro more terrified than before.
That same night...
Lucía couldn't sleep.
The guest room assigned to employees suddenly felt unfamiliar.
She opened the small cloth bag she always carried.
Inside lay the only belongings left by the woman she believed was her mother.
An old silver necklace.
A faded birth bracelet.
And one photograph.
She had looked at it thousands of times.
Tonight...
For the first time...
She looked closer.
There...
Half hidden behind a woman's shoulder...
stood the same little girl from the family portrait.
The same white ribbon.
The same smile.
On the back was a single handwritten sentence.
"Forgive me, Esperanza. I had to save her."
Lucía's hands began shaking.
Because the handwriting...
May you like
Matched perfectly...
The signature on Doña Esperanza's old birthday cards.
