Chapter 2 - The Name No One Was Ever Supposed to Hear

Silence swallowed the trophy room.
Even the old bolero continued playing in the background as though the house itself had forgotten how to breathe.
Doña Esperanza's trembling body stiffened.
Her cloudy eyes, so often lost in another world, suddenly sharpened with an impossible clarity.
She wasn't looking at Lucía anymore.
She was staring directly at Camila.
For the first time in years, there was recognition.
Real recognition.
Camila noticed it too.
Her confidence faltered.
"Mother..." she whispered carefully. "It's me."
Doña Esperanza's expression changed.
Not with affection.
With horror.
"You..." she murmured.
The word was barely louder than the music.
"You came back."
Camila forced a nervous laugh.
"Of course I came back."
But the old woman slowly shook her head.
"No..."
Her frail hand began trembling violently.
"You came back... after the fire."
Alejandro felt every muscle in his body tighten.
The fire.
No one had spoken about that night in nearly twenty years.
Officially, it had been an electrical accident at the family's original hacienda outside Guadalajara.
One servant had died.
Several rooms had been destroyed.
Insurance had covered everything.
The family rebuilt.
Life moved on.
At least...
That was the story everyone had been told.
Camila's face drained of color.
"Mother doesn't know what she's saying," she said quickly.
"She's confused."
But Doña Esperanza ignored her.
Instead...
She reached toward Lucía.
With surprising strength, she grabbed the young woman's wrist.
Then she whispered five words that froze every person in the room.
"You have her mother's eyes."
Lucía frowned.
"My... mother?"
Doña Esperanza nodded slowly.
"Marisol."
The name struck Lucía like lightning.
She staggered backward.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"My mother's name was Rosa."
The old woman closed her eyes.
"They made you believe that."
The lawyer lowered the briefcase.
Even the guards exchanged uncertain glances.
Camila suddenly exploded.
"Enough!"
She pointed furiously toward the security guards.
"Remove this girl immediately!"
Neither guard moved.
One of them looked toward Alejandro, who had finally stepped into the room.
His polished shoes echoed across the marble floor.
Every head turned.
Camila froze.
"Alejandro..."
"You were home?"
"I've been here long enough."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
He stopped beside Lucía.
Without saying a word, he offered her his hand.
She hesitated only a moment before taking it.
He helped her to her feet.
Then he looked at the blood still resting on her lip.
"You hit an employee."
Camila crossed her arms.
"She manipulated Mother."
"I watched everything."
Those four words landed like a hammer.
"I saw Lucía dancing with her."
"I saw Mother smile."
"I heard every word."
Camila's lips parted.
For the first time in years...
She looked afraid.
She turned desperately toward the lawyer.
"Tell him."
The lawyer remained silent.
Alejandro slowly faced him.
"Who hired you?"
Camila answered before he could.
"I did."
"For what purpose?"
"To begin guardianship proceedings."
Alejandro extended his hand.
"The paperwork."
Camila hugged the folder against her chest.
"No."
"It's confidential."
Alejandro smiled without warmth.
"It concerns our mother."
"It concerns this family."
"It concerns property owned jointly by both of us."
"You don't get to hide it."
The lawyer swallowed hard.
He had represented wealthy families for decades.
He recognized power when he saw it.
Slowly...
He reached into his briefcase.
Camila grabbed his arm.
"If you hand him those documents, you're fired."
The lawyer gently removed her fingers.
"I'm sorry."
He handed the folder to Alejandro.
Camila stared in disbelief.
Alejandro opened it.
His eyes scanned page after page.
Medical evaluations.
Psychiatric recommendations.
Financial summaries.
Real estate transfer drafts.
Power of attorney forms.
Then...
One document stopped him cold.
It wasn't about medical care.
It was a property liquidation agreement.
Every family vineyard.
Every tequila distillery.
Every ancestral parcel of land.
Prepared for sale.
Already negotiated.
The buyer's signature line was blank.
Camila had planned everything.
She wasn't trying to protect their mother.
She had been preparing to erase their family's entire legacy.
Alejandro slowly closed the folder.
"You planned to sell Father's land."
Camila lifted her chin.
"It makes financial sense."
"Our workers?"
"They'll receive compensation."
"Our villages?"
"They'll adapt."
"Our history?"
She shrugged.
"History doesn't pay dividends."
The sentence echoed through the room.
Even the guards seemed disturbed.
Lucía quietly stepped beside Doña Esperanza, placing a reassuring hand over the old woman's shoulder.
The elderly woman suddenly began crying.
Not softly.
Violently.
Her breathing became ragged.
Her hands searched desperately through the air.
"No..."
"No..."
"They're taking the baby..."
Lucía knelt immediately.
"Señora Esperanza."
"Look at me."
"You're safe."
But the old woman wasn't seeing the room anymore.
She was trapped inside another time.
Smoke.
Flames.
Screams.
"The baby..."
"They said she died..."
Alejandro crouched beside her.
"What baby?"
His mother's eyes locked onto his.
For one terrifying moment...
She looked completely sane.
"The little girl..."
"The one from the fire..."
Camila suddenly shouted.
"Stop this!"
She lunged toward the wheelchair.
Lucía instinctively stepped between them.
"Don't touch her."
Camila's composure shattered.
"You think you've won?"
She laughed—a sharp, desperate sound that echoed through the trophy room.
"You have no idea what you're digging up."
Alejandro stood.
"What does that mean?"
Camila smiled.
Not happily.
Hopelessly.
"You really believe Father died with clean hands?"
Alejandro's heart pounded.
"What are you talking about?"
Camila looked at the portraits hanging across the trophy room.
Generations of proud men and women.
The founders of the family empire.
Then she whispered,
"If Mother remembers everything..."
"...this family name won't survive the week."
Before anyone could ask another question—
A loud crash echoed from the hallway.
One of the household staff burst into the room, pale and shaking.
"Señor Alejandro!"
"What happened?"
The man struggled to catch his breath.
"It's the archive room."
"What about it?"
"The old storage vault..."
"It was broken into."
Alejandro frowned.
"By whom?"
The servant's voice dropped to a whisper.
"The security cameras show..."
He looked toward Camila.
"...someone entered the vault this morning."
"They took only one thing."
"What?"
The servant swallowed.
"The box labeled..."
MARISOL ÁLVAREZ — CONFIDENTIAL.
The room went completely silent.
Lucía felt her knees weaken.
Because Álvarez...
Was the surname printed on the only photograph she had ever found among her late mother's belongings.
And suddenly...
May you like
For the first time in her life...
She realized her mother may have lied about who she really was.
