Chapter 9 - The Sun-Drenched Hills

The hills of Tuscany were painted in shades of olive green and deep gold.

A year had passed since they left the freezing winds of Chicago. In a beautiful stone villa overlooking a valley of vineyards, Vincent Moretti finally found what he had been searching for his entire life: peace.

The heavy heavy blankets were gone. Vincent wore light linen shirts, his skin deeply tanned by the Italian sun. The thallium poison was completely eradicated from his system, leaving him stronger and healthier than he had been in his thirties.

Lily attended a local school in the nearby village. She spoke fluent Italian now, her laughter echoing through the olive groves as she chased the family’s new golden retriever through the grass.

Elena had started her own boutique olive oil business, transforming her love for the land into a thriving, legitimate passion. She no longer looked like the terrified woman sleeping in a shelter. She was radiant, confident, and deeply loved.

One afternoon, Marco arrived at the villa. He didn't wear a black suit or carry a weapon anymore. He wore a casual polo shirt and drove a fiat. He had stayed in Chicago to finalize the sale of the last remaining properties.

"It’s all done, Vincent," Marco said, handing over a final ledger detailing the complete liquidation of the Moretti empire. Every dollar had been washed clean, invested in ethical trusts and charities. "You are completely out. The government closed the file. You're a ghost to them now."

Vincent looked at the paperwork, then threw it into the stone fireplace, watching the last remnants of his criminal past turn to ash.

"Thank you, Marco," Vincent said, shaking his old friend’s hand. "For everything."

"Live a good life, Boss," Marco smiled. "You earned it."
