Chapter 5 - Blood and Embers

Elena and Lily entered the bedroom cautiously. Lily was still clutching her book of fairy tales, while Elena looked exhausted, her shoulders tense with the expectation of violence. She knew too much now; she had witnessed the inner workings of a criminal empire. In her world, knowing too much usually meant disappearing.
"Sit down, please," Vincent said, gesturing to the two leather armchairs near his bed.
Elena sat, keeping Lily close to her side. "Mr. Moretti... if you want us to leave the city, we will. We won't say a word about tonight. I swear it."
Vincent looked at her, his heart aching. "Elena. Look at me."
She lifted her eyes.
"Do you really think I don't know who you are?" Vincent asked softly. "Nine years ago. The Blue Velvet Lounge on 47th Street. It was raining just like this."
Elena’s breath hitched. Her hand tightened on Lily’s shoulder. "You remember."
"I never forgot," Vincent said. "I looked for you for months after that night. But you vanished."
"I had to," Elena whispered, a tear escaping her eye. "I found out I was pregnant. I knew who you were, Vincent. I saw your face on the television. I saw the words they used—mafia, murder, extortion. I didn't want my baby growing up in a world of blood and bullets. I wanted her to have a normal life."
Vincent looked at Lily. The girl was staring back at him, her intelligent eyes absorbing everything.
"You have my chin, Lily," Vincent said gently. "And your mother’s courage."
Lily looked from Vincent to Elena. "Mom? Is this the man from the photograph in your jewelry box?"
Elena closed her eyes and nodded, a sob catching in her throat.
Vincent felt a profound wave of emotion wash over him—a warmth that completely obliterated the last remnants of the thallium poison. He had spent his whole life building an empire of concrete, iron, and fear, believing he would die alone in a golden cage. Yet, here was his blood, his legacy, saved by the very child he had never known he had.
"You’re my dad?" Lily asked, taking a small step toward the bed.
May you like
"I am," Vincent said, his voice cracking. "If you’ll have me."
Lily walked over and placed her small hand over his large, scarred one. "You look cold, Dad. But the monster is gone now. You're going to get warm."
