Chapter 3 - The Falling Mask

"Vincent, it’s a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, trying to pull her wrist free, but even in his weakened state, the Don of Chicago possessed a grip born of a lifetime of violence. "They’re setting me up! This... this maid and her street-rat child! They put it there! They want to extort you!"

"Lily has been in this house for three weeks," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a deadly, calm register that made the private nurse in the corner shrink backward. "I’ve been freezing since May."

He released her wrist, throwing her hand away from him as if she were a piece of garbage.

"Dr. Harris," Vincent commanded. "Call my security chief, Marco. Tell him to seal the gates. No one leaves. Especially not my fiancée."

Vanessa backed away, her high heels clicking frantically against the hardwood. "You can't prove anything! You think your men will believe a child over me? My father controls half the shipping docks in the city, Vincent! If you touch me, the alliance falls apart!"

"The alliance is already dead," Vincent said softly. He looked at Elena, who had instinctively pulled Lily behind her back, shielding her daughter with her own body.

"Elena," Vincent said, his voice softening in a way no one in the room had ever heard before. "Take Lily downstairs. Go to my private study on the first floor. Lock the door from the inside. Marco will be there in two minutes to guard you. You are safe here. Both of you."

Elena looked into Vincent’s eyes and saw not the terrifying mafia boss the tabloids wrote about, but the man from the South Side all those years ago—the man who had held her gently when the rest of the world was cruel. She nodded, grabbed Lily’s hand, and hurried out of the room.

As the door clicked shut behind them, Vincent looked back at Vanessa. The weakness in his body seemed to vanish, replaced by the cold, ruthless adrenaline of a apex predator who had just discovered the viper in his bed.

"Marco," Vincent spoke into the intercom beside his bed.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Bring the zip-ties up to my room," Vincent ordered, his gaze locked on his trembling fiancée. "We’re going to have a talk about wedding vows."
