CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PERFECT SMILE

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PERFECT SMILE

The story of the little girl who had saved Cole House spread faster than anyone expected.

By sunrise, local news stations were praising the quick response of the estate staff. Social media filled with photos of firefighters carrying Lily on one shoulder while she clutched Mr. Buttons in the other arm. Reporters called her "the tiny hero of Newport."

Nathan declined every interview.

Grace declined them too.

Lily, thankfully, remained blissfully unaware that thousands of strangers suddenly knew her name.

Caroline, however, understood exactly what public sympathy could do.

If Grace became the heroine...

Then Caroline became the villain.

She couldn't allow that.

The next morning, Nathan's chief of staff entered his office carrying a thick folder.

"You asked for every security log."

Nathan closed his laptop.

"What did you find?"

The man placed several printed pages on the desk.

"Someone accessed the surveillance system at 11:42 p.m. the night of the engagement party."

"Who?"

"There was only one authorized access using a guest security code."

Nathan looked down.

The temporary access badge belonged to...

Caroline Prescott.

His heartbeat slowed.

Not from surprise.

From certainty.

"What exactly did she do?"

"She copied several camera recordings."

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

"Were any files deleted?"

The chief of staff nodded.

"Yes."

"But our backup server preserved them."

Nathan stood immediately.

"I want everything."

For the next two hours, Nathan watched footage no one else had seen.

One camera showed Caroline stopping Mrs. Dunleavy in the hallway before Lily wandered out.

There was still no audio.

But another hallway camera—installed during a renovation months earlier—captured both video and sound.

Nathan pressed Play.

Caroline's voice filled the office.

"If the child comes out, don't stop her."

Mrs. Dunleavy stared in disbelief.

"Excuse me?"

"I said leave her alone."

"Miss Prescott, she's only three."

"Exactly."

"It'll prove my point."

"What point?"

Caroline smiled.

"That employees who break rules eventually embarrass themselves."

Mrs. Dunleavy shook her head.

"I won't do that."

"You'll do exactly what I say."

"I answer to Mr. Cole."

"For now."

A long silence followed.

Then Caroline leaned closer.

"When Nathan sees the disruption she causes..."

"...Grace will be gone by tomorrow."

Nathan stopped the recording.

His hands were shaking.

Not with anger alone.

With disbelief.

The frightened child had never wandered into the ballroom by accident.

Caroline had allowed it to happen.

She had used a three-year-old little girl as a weapon.

Nathan asked only one question.

"Where is she?"

That evening, Caroline hosted a charity committee meeting inside the mansion's sunroom.

She laughed gracefully as photographers took pictures.

The image was perfect.

Until Nathan walked in.

Without smiling.

Without greeting anyone.

"Everyone, please excuse us."

The room immediately emptied.

Only Caroline remained.

She looked mildly annoyed.

"This better be important."

Nathan placed a tablet on the table.

"You should watch something."

"What is it?"

"The truth."

He pressed Play.

Caroline's own voice echoed through the room.

"If the child comes out, don't stop her..."

The color drained from her face.

She reached toward the tablet.

Nathan pulled it away.

"No."

Silence.

Finally she spoke.

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

"I was protecting us."

"You were manipulating a child."

"I was protecting our future."

"You terrorized a three-year-old."

Caroline's composure cracked.

"You always choose weakness!"

Nathan stared.

"Weakness?"

"Yes!"

"People like Grace never stop asking."

"They take."

"They expect."

"They cling."

Nathan spoke quietly.

"Do you know what Lily asked me?"

Caroline looked away.

"She asked whether she was human."

The words hung between them.

Nathan continued.

"A three-year-old child questioned whether she deserved to exist."

"And you caused that."

For the first time in years...

Caroline had no answer.

Nathan slowly removed the engagement ring from her finger.

"It's over."

She laughed nervously.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

"You'll embarrass yourself."

"I'd rather embarrass myself..."

"...than spend my life beside someone who mistakes cruelty for strength."

She grabbed his arm.

"You'll regret this."

Nathan stepped back.

"No."

"I regret not seeing you sooner."

Within hours, the engagement was over.

By morning, every newspaper in America carried the headline.

Billionaire Calls Off Wedding.

The media invented dozens of explanations.

Irreconcilable differences.

Financial disputes.

Family conflict.

Nathan offered none.

He refused to destroy Caroline publicly.

The recordings were quietly turned over to the appropriate authorities after investigators requested them as part of an internal review regarding evidence tampering and workplace misconduct.

Caroline disappeared from Newport within a week.

She never returned to Cole House.
