CHAPTER 6 — THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SAVED A LIFE

CHAPTER 6 — THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SAVED A LIFE

Three days later, the rain came.

Not gentle rain.

A violent coastal storm that battered Newport with fierce winds and sheets of water.

By late afternoon, much of the estate had lost power.

Generators activated automatically, but only for essential systems.

The west wing remained dark.

Nathan was in his home office reviewing financial reports when the lights flickered again.

A maintenance crew hurried through the halls checking electrical panels.

Grace, despite being offered another day off, had returned to work.

Bills didn't wait for emotional recovery.

Neither did rent.

Mrs. Dunleavy assigned her to help secure the guest wing against leaks.

Lily, whose preschool had closed because of the storm, stayed once again in the staff breakroom—with permission this time.

Nathan himself had insisted.

"If Lily needs to be here," he had said, "then she belongs here."

Those words had quietly restored something inside Grace she thought had died years ago.

Respect.

Around four o'clock, Lily wandered only as far as the laundry room.

She wasn't looking for adventure.

She was looking for crayons.

Instead...

She smelled something strange.

Not smoke exactly.

More like burning plastic.

She wrinkled her tiny nose.

"Mr. Buttons..."

she whispered to the rabbit.

"Something stinks."

The smell grew stronger near a service hallway beneath the west staircase.

Lily followed it.

A faint crackling sound came from inside an electrical utility closet.

The door wasn't fully closed.

Through the narrow opening she saw tiny orange sparks dancing behind a panel.

She remembered something her mother had once told her.

"If you ever smell burning wires, get an adult immediately."

Lily turned and ran.

As fast as her little legs could carry her.

Grace was carrying clean linens upstairs when Lily crashed into her.

"Mommy!"

Grace nearly dropped the basket.

"Lily?"

"Fire!"

Grace immediately knelt.

"Where?"

"The little room!"

"The buzzing room!"

"It smells bad!"

Grace didn't hesitate.

She grabbed Lily's hand and sprinted toward the hallway.

The moment she opened the utility closet...

Her stomach dropped.

An overloaded electrical panel was spitting sparks into a pile of old insulation.

Tiny flames had already begun climbing the wall.

If the fire reached the wooden beams hidden behind the panel...

The entire west wing could ignite.

Grace slammed the alarm.

"FIRE!"

The mansion exploded into motion.

Staff evacuated.

Security responded.

Sprinklers activated in nearby corridors.

Within minutes, firefighters arrived.

The blaze was contained before it spread beyond the utility room.

The fire chief later shook Nathan's hand.

"You were lucky."

"Another five minutes..."

He looked back at the scorched hallway.

"...and we'd be talking about millions in structural damage."

Nathan turned toward Grace.

"You found it?"

Grace smiled gently.

"No."

She looked down.

"Lily did."

Every firefighter looked at the tiny girl clutching her patched rabbit.

One of them smiled.

"You saved a lot of people today, sweetheart."

Lily blinked.

"I did?"

"You certainly did."

She thought about that.

Then asked the question only a child could ask.

"Does that mean..."

"...rich people are happy I came?"

Several firefighters exchanged glances.

Nathan felt something tighten painfully inside his chest.

He knelt before her.

"No, Lily."

He smiled softly.

"It means we're the lucky ones."

Because if you hadn't been here...

None of us might have gotten out in time.

Across the courtyard, standing beneath a black umbrella, Caroline watched the scene unfold.

Everyone was praising Grace.

Everyone was praising Lily.

The little girl she wanted erased...

Had just become a hero.

Caroline's smile never reached her eyes.

She whispered to herself,

"This isn't over."

And for the first time...

May you like

Those words sounded less like confidence—

and more like desperation.
