CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS

CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS
The engagement party never recovered.
Music resumed eventually.
Champagne continued flowing.
People smiled for photographers.
But beneath every conversation lay the same question.
What had just happened?
Nathan excused himself from the ballroom.
Instead of heading toward his office...
He walked to the staff wing.
No billionaire had entered that hallway during a party in years.
Employees stopped working the moment they saw him.
Some thought someone was about to be fired.
Others assumed an emergency.
Nathan simply asked,
"Where's the breakroom?"
Mrs. Dunleavy pointed.
"This way, sir."
Inside the small room, the contrast was heartbreaking.
The ballroom sparkled with gold.
The breakroom had chipped cabinets.
A flickering fluorescent light.
An old coffee machine held together with tape.
One worn sofa.
A tiny folding table.
This...
Nathan realized...
Was where the people who kept his mansion running spent their evenings.
He noticed Lily's half-eaten peanut butter sandwich.
An apple juice box.
A tiny pink inhaler.
Grace hurried inside.
"Sir..."
Nathan picked up the inhaler.
"Asthma?"
Grace nodded.
"Since she was a baby."
"Is it severe?"
"Mostly during winter."
"Does insurance cover it?"
She gave a tired laugh.
"Some of it."
Nathan didn't answer.
He simply looked around.
Then he noticed something else.
A faded backpack.
Its zipper wouldn't close properly.
Inside were children's pajamas, coloring books with broken crayons, and a utility bill marked FINAL NOTICE.
Grace quickly reached for it.
"I'm sorry."
Nathan stopped her.
"You don't have to apologize for living."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I wasn't apologizing for that."
"What were you apologizing for?"
"For letting you see it."
Nathan had no reply.
They sat in silence for a moment.
Finally, he asked,
"How long have you worked here?"
"Almost two years."
"And before that?"
"A nursing assistant."
"What happened?"
"My husband died."
Nathan looked up.
Grace continued quietly.
"Construction accident."
"I'm sorry."
"There wasn't much compensation."
"So you took this job."
"I took three jobs."
Nathan frowned.
"Three?"
She nodded.
"Here."
"A diner on weekends."
"And cleaning offices at night."
"When do you sleep?"
Grace smiled faintly.
"When Lily does."
Nathan stared at her.
He suddenly realized something unsettling.
He knew the quarterly earnings of thirty-seven international companies.
He knew oil prices in six currencies.
He knew the birthdays of every board member.
But he had never once asked how the woman who served coffee in his own home survived.

Outside the breakroom, Caroline stood unseen.
She had followed him.
Every word tightened the knot of anger in her chest.
This conversation was dangerous.
Not because Grace had done anything remarkable.
But because Nathan was beginning to care.
And caring...
Made people difficult to control.
Caroline quietly stepped away before anyone noticed her.
She already had a new plan.
If she couldn't remove Grace through authority...
She would destroy her through reputation.
By the end of the night, whispers would begin.
By morning...
Grace Miller would become the perfect scapegoat.
May you like
And Nathan Cole would be forced to choose between the woman he intended to marry...
...and the inconvenient truth she wanted buried forever.
