CHAPTER 7 – THE PRICE OF MERCY

CHAPTER 7 – THE PRICE OF MERCY
Three weeks later, the operating room lights above Finn Donovan finally turned green.
Mav had recovered enough to walk with her arm in a sling, though every step still reminded her of the night that had changed everything.
She stood outside the surgical suite, twisting the frayed strap of her handbag.
Across from her sat Rafe and Celia.
Neither had said much.
Some moments deserved silence more than conversation.
Finally, the surgeon emerged.
The expression behind his mask told them everything before he spoke.
"The operation was a success."
Mav's knees nearly gave out.
Celia caught her before she fell.
"His heart is strong."
The doctor smiled.
"We expect him to make a full recovery."
Mav covered her face and sobbed.
Not the quiet tears she had cried alone for years.
These were the tears of someone finally allowed to stop fighting.
Later that afternoon, Finn slowly opened his eyes.
"Mav?"
She leaned over the bed.
"I'm here."
"Did I do it?"
She laughed through her tears.
"You did."
He smiled weakly.
"My chest feels funny."
"That's because your heart finally got the help it deserved."
Finn looked around the room.
Then toward Rafe.
"Mister..."
Rafe stepped closer.
"Yes?"
"Were you the man from the restaurant?"
"I was."
Finn stared at him for a long moment.
Then held out his tiny hand.
"Thank you...for helping my sister."
The words hit Rafe harder than any bullet ever had.
He took the boy's hand carefully.
"No, Finn."
His voice was rough.
"She helped all of us."
That evening, Luca entered Rafe's office carrying a folder.
"Vincent Moretti has agreed to surrender."
Rafe looked up.
"Voluntarily?"
"He knows what happens if he keeps running."
"And the men who attacked Saltini's?"
"They've confessed."
Luca hesitated.
"They said they never intended to hurt the waitress."
Rafe closed the file.
"They did."
"What are your orders?"
For years, the answer would have been obvious.
Destroy them.
Erase every trace of their organization.
Instead, Rafe looked out over Boston Harbor.
"My sister asked me something."
"What?"
"She asked whether surviving should always require someone else to lose everything."
Luca frowned.
"I don't understand."
"I didn't either."
Until Mav.
The next morning, Vincent Moretti was arrested after accepting a negotiated surrender arranged through federal authorities.
Every document.
Every account.
Every corrupt partner.
Turned over.
Boston's largest organized crime investigation in decades unfolded without another drop of blood.
When reporters asked why Rafe hadn't chosen revenge...
May you like
He answered with only one sentence.
"I've already seen what courage looks like."
