CHAPTER 5 – A PROMISE MADE BESIDE A HOSPITAL BED

CHAPTER 5 – A PROMISE MADE BESIDE A HOSPITAL BED
The first thing Mav noticed was the beeping.
Slow.
Steady.
Alive.
Then came the smell of antiseptic and the dull ache that seemed to wrap around every inch of her body.
She tried to lift her left arm.
A sharp pain stopped her.
A soft voice immediately answered.
"Don't."
Mav blinked.
The room slowly came into focus.
A nurse stepped forward with a relieved smile.
"Welcome back."
"...How long?"
"You've been unconscious for almost twenty hours."
Panic replaced the fog.
"Finn."
Her voice cracked.
"My brother... where is he?"
"He's safe."
"Please..."
The nurse squeezed her hand.
"He's been waiting outside since this morning."
Before Mav could answer, the door burst open.
"MAV!"
Finn ran into the room with his teddy bear clutched against his chest.
He stopped only when he saw the bandages.
His eyes immediately filled with tears.
"I'm sorry."
Mav frowned.
"What are you apologizing for?"
"If I wasn't sick..."
His voice broke.
"...you wouldn't have worked so much."
She reached for him with her good arm.
It hurt.
She didn't care.
"Come here."
Finn carefully climbed onto the side of the bed.
She kissed the top of his head.
"You listen to me."
He nodded.
"You are never the reason something bad happens."
"But—"
"Never."
She smiled despite the pain.
"You hear me?"
"...I hear you."
They held each other quietly.
Neither noticed the man standing outside the half-open door.
Rafe Calloway.
He had witnessed everything.
Every word.
Every apology.
Every lie Mav told to protect her little brother from guilt.
Something tightened painfully inside his chest.
Because once...
Long ago...
He had been the older brother making promises he wasn't sure he could keep.
An hour later, the nurse convinced Finn to get lunch with Mrs. Alvarez.
Only after they left did Rafe knock softly.
Mav looked toward the door.
Recognition slowly dawned.
"The birthday dinner..."
He nodded.
"My name is Rafe."
"I know."
She gave a tired laugh.
"Kind of hard not to after yesterday."
He stepped closer.
"You saved my sister."
"I saved a frightened girl."
"They're the same person."
Silence settled between them.
Finally Mav smiled weakly.
"Is she okay?"
Rafe stared at her.
"You've been unconscious for almost a day."
"I know."
"And the first thing you asked about was your brother."
"Of course."
"The second thing was my sister."
"...Yes."
"You still haven't asked about yourself."
She looked genuinely confused.
"I'm still here."
Rafe had negotiated with senators.
Threatened crime bosses.
Faced juries and assassins.
Yet somehow...
This simple woman left him without words.
He placed a thick envelope on the bedside table.
Mav frowned.
"What's that?"
"A thank-you."
"I don't want money."
"It isn't payment."
She looked at him carefully.
"What is it?"
"An opportunity."
She slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a cashier's check.
The number made her stop breathing.
Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Her hands began shaking.
"No."
She immediately pushed it back.
"I can't."
"You can."
"I didn't save your sister for money."
"I know."
"Then take it away."
Rafe didn't move.
"It covers Finn's surgery."
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
She looked away.
"No."
He blinked.
"No?"
"I won't let my brother think his life belongs to someone else."
The answer stunned him.
Most people tried to take from Rafe Calloway.
This woman refused everything.
Even salvation.
"You misunderstand."
"I don't think I do."
"You owe me nothing."
"I'll still feel like I do."
Rafe quietly picked up the check.
Then tore it in half.
Mav gasped.
"What are you doing?"
"If money insults your dignity..."
He removed another document.
"...then this won't."
She looked down.
It wasn't a check.
It was a letter.
A charitable foundation had anonymously approved every expense related to Finn's treatment.
No repayment.
No conditions.
No publicity.
No names.
Only one sentence at the bottom.
Every child deserves a chance to grow up.
Mav stared at it.
"You..."
Rafe interrupted gently.
"You don't know who donated."
Her eyes met his.
"You did."
"I know nothing about anonymous people."
For the first time in years...
He smiled.
A real smile.
Small.
Awkward.
Almost unfamiliar.
That evening...
Outside the hospital...
Luca caught up with Rafe.
"Boss."
"Yes."
"We found Gerald Moss."
Rafe's expression disappeared.
"And?"
"He thinks you'll sue."
"No."
"He thinks you'll ruin his career."
"No."
Luca frowned.
"What, then?"
Rafe looked toward the hospital windows.
"He spent years teaching people that kindness has no value."
May you like
His voice turned cold.
"I'm going to let him learn its price."
