CHAPTER 6 – THE FALL OF GERALD MOSS

CHAPTER 6 – THE FALL OF GERALD MOSS

Saltini's reopened two nights later.

The elegant dining room buzzed with nervous conversation.

Every television in Boston had shown the attack.

Every newspaper carried the same photograph.

A waitress shielding a terrified young woman with her own body.

Customers weren't coming for the food anymore.

They came because they wanted to see where courage had happened.

Gerald Moss hated every second of it.

"Stop talking about her."

He snapped at the staff.

"She's just an employee."

No one answered.

No one smiled.

For the first time in years...

The waiters looked at him differently.

Not with fear.

With disgust.

At exactly seven o'clock...

The front doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

Rafe Calloway walked inside.

Behind him came Celia.

Then Luca.

Then half a dozen impeccably dressed men and women.

Lawyers.

Accountants.

City officials.

Moss hurried forward with a forced grin.

"Mr. Calloway! We're honored—"

"You shouldn't be."

The smile froze on Moss's face.

"I'd like to reserve the dining room."

"Of course."

"For a staff dinner."

"...Excuse me?"

Rafe turned toward the frightened employees.

"Tonight..."

His voice carried across the restaurant.

"...no employee will serve."

Confused whispers spread through the room.

"The people who spend every night carrying trays..."

He looked around the room.

"...will spend tonight sitting at the tables."

One by one, waiters looked at each other in disbelief.

"You've earned one evening as guests."

Moss laughed nervously.

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

"No."

Rafe answered calmly.

"It isn't."

"It violates company policy."

Rafe nodded toward one of the attorneys.

The lawyer placed a folder on the nearest table.

"You may want to read page three."

Moss opened it.

His face turned white.

"What is this?"

"The ownership transfer."

His hands shook.

"What ownership transfer?"

Rafe answered quietly.

"This afternoon..."

"...I bought Saltini's."

The room exploded into stunned gasps.

Moss stumbled backward.

"You can't—"

"I already did."

"You...you planned this?"

"No."

Rafe looked toward the empty place where Mav usually worked.

"You did."

An elderly dishwasher began crying.

A young busboy laughed out loud.

One waitress covered her mouth.

Moss's knees weakened.

"I've given eleven years to this restaurant."

Rafe nodded.

"And somehow..."

"You never learned the names of the people who kept it running."

Silence.

Rafe continued.

"I asked every employee one question today."

Moss swallowed.

"What question?"

"What is the kindest thing Gerald Moss has ever done for you?"

The manager waited.

No answer came.

Not one.

Rafe faced the entire staff.

"Starting tonight..."

"No employee will pay for broken dishes caused by customers."

Several servers stared.

"No employee will lose wages because someone else made a mess."

A cook quietly wiped his eyes.

"Every staff member receives health insurance."

The kitchen erupted into whispers.

"Paid sick leave."

More tears.

"And anyone caring for an ill family member may apply for emergency assistance."

The room became completely silent.

Because none of them had ever imagined hearing those words.

Finally...

Rafe turned back toward Gerald Moss.

"As for you..."

Moss could barely breathe.

"You are dismissed."

"Please..."

"No."

"I need this job."

The words escaped before he realized the irony.

Rafe looked at him steadily.

"Do you?"

Moss lowered his head.

For the first time...

He understood exactly how Mav had felt every day.

Powerless.

Humiliated.

Afraid.

Rafe spoke one final sentence.

"I hope whoever hires you next..."

"...shows you exactly as much mercy as you showed the people beneath you."

Security escorted Gerald Moss out.

No one applauded.

No one celebrated.

They simply watched him leave.

Because justice didn't always sound like cheering.

Sometimes...

It sounded like a door quietly closing behind the man who had mistaken authority for cruelty.

That same evening, in her hospital room, Mav received a bouquet of white lilies with no card.
