CHAPTER 6 – THE FATHER WHO CHOSE THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 6 – THE FATHER WHO CHOSE THE TRUTH

The gun battle lasted less than four minutes.

It felt like forever.

When the shooting finally stopped, two attackers lay wounded.

Three had escaped.

One police officer had been injured.

But Elena Vargas was still alive.

Barely.

As detectives secured the building, Mateo questioned one of the captured gunmen.

The man refused to speak.

Until Alejandro entered the room.

The billionaire looked nothing like the confident businessman who had walked into the restaurant the night before.

His jacket was stained with blood.

Not his own.

Lucía's.

She had cut her arm shielding Valeria from flying glass.

Alejandro had pressed his hands against the wound until doctors arrived.

Something inside him had changed.

Completely.

The gunman laughed.

"You rich people always think money fixes everything."

Alejandro remained calm.

"I don't want your respect."

"I want one answer."

"Who hired you?"

The man smiled.

"You already know."

"No."

"I want to hear you say it."

The gunman leaned forward.

"Your father."

Silence.

"I've worked for Don Ricardo for eleven years."

"He said the nurse couldn't leave that hospital alive."

"And if the child was there..."

He shrugged.

"Collateral damage."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

His own father...

had ordered the murder of a three-year-old girl.

Hours later, police obtained an emergency warrant.

At sunrise, dozens of officers surrounded Ricardo Santillán's private estate.

The gates were forced open.

Luxury cars filled the driveway.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Inside the mansion...

Ricardo was gone.

Only one thing remained on his desk.

A handwritten note.

Addressed to Alejandro.

It read:

A weak man protects one child.
A strong man protects a family empire.
One day you'll understand why I did what was necessary.

Alejandro slowly folded the note.

Then handed it to Detective Mateo.

"I won't."

Meanwhile, forensic investigators searched Ricardo's private office.

Behind an antique bookcase they discovered a hidden vault.

Inside were dozens of sealed folders.

Each labeled with a year.

Each containing photographs.

Birth certificates.

Payment ledgers.

Medical files.

Not one stolen child.

Not ten.

But forty-seven.

Forty-seven babies who had vanished from hospitals across Mexico over nearly two decades.

Some had been sold overseas.

Some had been given to powerful families.

Some had simply disappeared.

Lucía stared at the photographs.

Mothers smiling during pregnancy.

Hospital bracelets.

Ultrasound images.

Lives stolen before they had even begun.

She whispered,

"They weren't accidents."

Mateo answered,

"No."

"They built an industry."

Then a young forensic officer hurried into the room carrying a small locked metal box.

"Detective..."

"You need to see this."

Inside was a flash drive.

The same one Rosa Méndez had rescued from the burning chapel before firefighters pulled her unconscious from the flames.

Technicians connected it to a secure computer.

One video file appeared.

Date:

Three years earlier.

The recording began inside a delivery room.

The timestamp matched the exact night Lucía gave birth.

Everyone watched in silence.

There was Lucía.

Weak.

Exhausted.

Smiling through tears.

A newborn crying in a nurse's arms.

Then another figure entered the room.

Don Ricardo Santillán.

He looked at the baby.

Then calmly said words that froze everyone watching:

"Take the child. Tell the mother she died."

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

Lucía collapsed into tears.

Alejandro stood motionless, unable to breathe.

His father's crime was no longer suspicion.

It was recorded.

It was undeniable.

And somewhere beyond the reach of the police...

Don Ricardo Santillán was already running.

But he had made one mistake.

He believed destroying the clinic would destroy the truth.

He didn't know the truth had just been copied...

to every prosecutor, every television station, and every major news network in the country.

By sunset, all of Mexico would know the face of the man who stole children.

And the hunt for him had only just begun.
