CHAPTER 5 – THE NURSE WHO REFUSED TO DIE WITH THE SECRET

CHAPTER 5 – THE NURSE WHO REFUSED TO DIE WITH THE SECRET
The emergency room at San Gabriel General Hospital was surrounded by police officers before dawn.
Television vans crowded the entrance.
Reporters shouted questions across the barricades.
The fire at Santa Elena Women's Clinic had already become national news.
But inside Intensive Care Unit Three, one woman mattered more than every headline outside.
Her name was Elena Vargas.
For twenty-eight years she had worked as a neonatal nurse.
Three years earlier, she had resigned without explanation.
Everyone believed she had retired because of poor health.
The truth was far darker.
She had spent every day since then waiting for the courage to tell the world what she had done.
Detective Mateo Cruz stood outside her room with Lucía, Alejandro, and two prosecutors.
"The doctors removed a great deal of smoke from her lungs," one physician explained.
"She may only have enough strength for a short interview."
Lucía's hands trembled.
"What if she dies before she speaks?"
Mateo answered quietly.
"Then we'll never know how many children disappeared."
The words settled over everyone like ice.
Inside the room, Elena lay connected to oxygen tubes.
Her face was pale.
Her hands were burned.
But when she saw Lucía...
she immediately began crying.
"I know you."
Lucía frowned.
"We've never met."
"Oh..."
Elena whispered.
"We met."
"You just don't remember."
She looked toward Alejandro.
"And neither do you."
The detective activated his recorder.
"Mrs. Vargas, tell us what happened."
She closed her eyes.
"It began fifteen years ago."
"Santa Elena wasn't just a maternity clinic."
"It was a marketplace."
Silence.
"A marketplace for babies."
Lucía felt her knees weaken.
Elena continued.
"Rich couples came through private agencies."
"Politicians."
"Businessmen."
"Foreign clients."
"If a mother was poor..."
"Alone..."
"Unconscious..."
"Or easy to silence..."
"The baby could disappear."
Alejandro stared in disbelief.
"No..."
"My adoption was legal."
Elena looked directly at him.
"You never adopted her."
"You purchased her."
His face turned white.
"I signed government papers."
"They were forged."
"I met with a judge."
"He was paid."
"The agency?"
"Fake."
"The orphan records?"
"Created afterward."
Every answer shattered another piece of Alejandro's world.
Lucía stepped closer.
"My daughter..."
Elena began sobbing.
"I carried her."
Lucía froze.
"You..."
"I was the nurse who took her from your arms."
The room became unbearably quiet.
"I hated myself every second."
"I wanted to refuse."
"But they threatened my son."
"They knew where he went to school."
"They said if I talked..."
"...my little boy would disappear too."
Lucía cried silently.
"I begged for my baby."
Elena nodded.
"You screamed until they sedated you."
"You never stopped calling her name."
Lucía whispered,
"I hadn't chosen one yet."
"You had."
Elena smiled weakly.
"You whispered it while you slept."
"Valeria."
Lucía burst into tears.
"I did?"
"You kissed her forehead."
"And said..."
"'My little Valeria.'"
The entire room fell silent.
The child Alejandro had raised...
had never been renamed.
Somehow...
the name her mother had whispered once...
had remained.
Alejandro looked toward the little girl sitting quietly beside Lucía.
He remembered asking his father what the baby's name should be.
Ricardo had answered immediately.
"Valeria."
He had never questioned why.
Now he knew.
His father had heard Lucía say it in the delivery room.
Detective Mateo asked the question everyone feared.
"Who organized the operation?"
Elena hesitated.
Then whispered one name.
"Doctor Mauricio Salazar."
The prosecutors exchanged glances.
Mateo frowned.
"He died two years ago."
Elena slowly shook her head.
"No."
Everyone stared.
"He faked his death."
"He changed his identity."
"He still works."
"For Ricardo Santillán."
Outside the hospital, dozens of reporters continued broadcasting live.
Suddenly a convoy of black SUVs sped toward the entrance.
Police officers reached for their weapons.
The vehicles stopped.
Masked men jumped out carrying rifles.
"Protect the witness!"
Mateo shouted.
Gunfire exploded across the parking lot.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
The hospital became a battlefield.
Inside ICU Three, one bullet pierced the window.
Elena screamed.
Lucía instinctively threw herself over Valeria.
Alejandro grabbed a metal cabinet and pushed it in front of the bed.
The detective fired back through the broken glass.
The attackers had come for only one reason.
May you like
To silence the last witness.
Forever.
