CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN WHO BOUGHT A CHILD

CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN WHO BOUGHT A CHILD

The entire restaurant seemed to stop breathing.

Don Ricardo Santillán stood beneath the crystal chandelier, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit. At seventy-two, he still carried the commanding presence that had built one of Mexico's largest business empires. Men twice his size stepped aside without being asked.

But tonight, for the first time in decades, there was fear in his eyes.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of scandal.

Fear of a little girl clinging to a waitress.

Fear of the truth.

His gaze swept across the room, lingering on the silver bracelet in Lucía's trembling hand.

For a fraction of a second, his composure cracked.

Then the mask returned.

"What is all this?" he asked calmly.

No one answered.

Alejandro stepped toward him.

"Father... Doña Isabel just said something impossible."

Ricardo glanced at the elderly housekeeper.

"You've grown emotional in your old age."

Isabel shook her head.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"I'm tired of carrying sins that don't belong to me."

Ricardo's smile disappeared.

"You should think carefully before speaking."

"I've thought carefully every night for three years."

She wiped away tears.

"I hear that young mother's screams every time I close my eyes."

Lucía stared at her.

"My screams?"

Isabel nodded.

"They never let you hold your baby."

Lucía's heartbeat thundered.

"No..."

"The doctor injected you after the delivery."

"You kept calling for your daughter."

"You tried to get out of bed."

"They told you the baby had died."

Lucía felt the restaurant spin around her.

Every nightmare.

Every unanswered question.

Every instinct she had tried to bury.

She hadn't imagined them.

Someone had stolen her child.

Alejandro turned sharply toward his father.

"What is she talking about?"

Ricardo answered without hesitation.

"An old woman consumed by guilt."

"Nothing more."

But his voice lacked its usual certainty.

Alejandro noticed.

So did everyone else.

Valeria suddenly looked up at Ricardo.

The little girl's body stiffened.

She buried her face in Lucía's shoulder.

"No..."

she whimpered.

"No Grandpa..."

A murmur spread through the guests.

Lucía frowned.

"She knows him."

Ricardo took a slow step forward.

"Valeria."

The child screamed.

"No!"

She squeezed Lucía so tightly her tiny fingers turned white.

Lucía instinctively shielded her.

"Don't come closer."

Ricardo stopped.

For the first time, someone had spoken to him like that in public.

Across the room, guests continued recording.

Within minutes, clips of the confrontation flooded social media.

"The Silent Billionaire's Daughter Speaks."

"Who Is the Waitress?"

"Child Calls Stranger Mommy."

Millions began watching.

Phones rang inside the Santillán corporate offices.

Journalists rushed toward the restaurant.

Outside, camera crews started gathering.

The family's carefully protected image was collapsing by the minute.

Alejandro's phone vibrated nonstop.

His chief legal adviser.

His board chairman.

The governor's office.

He ignored every call.

Instead, he looked at Lucía.

"What hospital?"

She blinked.

"What?"

"Where were you when your daughter was born?"

"Santa Elena Women's Clinic... in Guadalajara."

Alejandro froze.

That name.

He knew it.

Three years earlier...

that same clinic had arranged Valeria's adoption.

Or at least...

that was what he'd been told.

His stomach tightened.

Slowly he turned toward his father.

"You told me her birth mother abandoned her."

Ricardo remained silent.

"You said she signed every document."

Still silence.

Alejandro's voice hardened.

"You told me she wanted money."

Nothing.

Finally Ricardo answered.

"She would never have been able to raise that child."

Lucía gasped.

"You knew?"

Ricardo met her eyes.

"I gave her a future."

"You stole my daughter!"

"I saved her."

"You bought her!"

The words echoed through the restaurant.

Even Ricardo couldn't hide his anger anymore.

"I gave that child everything."

Lucía cried.

"You gave her a mansion."

"I would have given her a mother."

Doña Isabel stepped forward again.

"There are documents."

Every head turned.

Ricardo's face changed instantly.

"What documents?"

"The originals."

"You burned them."

"I made copies."

His eyes widened.

"You what?"

"I couldn't live with myself."

She reached into her handbag.

From inside, she removed an old brown envelope.

Yellowed with age.

Its corners worn from years of hiding.

"My insurance."

Ricardo lunged toward her.

"Give me that!"

Alejandro caught his father's wrist.

The restaurant fell silent again.

Father and son stood face to face.

Neither willing to let go.

"You lied to me."

Alejandro's voice was barely above a whisper.

Ricardo answered just as quietly.

"I protected this family."

"You destroyed it."

At that exact moment, police officers entered the restaurant.

Someone had reported a possible child abduction.

The lead detective introduced himself.

"I'm Detective Mateo Cruz."

He looked around carefully.

"Who is Lucía Morales?"

Lucía slowly raised her hand.

"I'm here."

"And who is the legal guardian of the child?"

Alejandro stepped forward.

"I am."

The detective nodded.

"Until we determine the facts, neither of you is leaving."

Ricardo quietly slipped one hand into his jacket.

His fingers closed around his phone.

Hidden beneath the table, he typed a single message.

Destroy everything at Santa Elena. Tonight.

May you like

He pressed send.

But he never noticed that one of the journalists filming from across the room had captured the entire movement.
