CHAPTER 7 – THE LITTLE WITNESS

CHAPTER 7 – THE LITTLE WITNESS

Three months later.

The courtroom of Suffolk County Superior Court was filled long before the hearing began.

Reporters crowded every bench.

The story had spread across the country.

The billionaire.

The sick little girl.

The fiancée who had hidden behind charity galas and perfect smiles.

Nathan sat beside Lily.

She looked healthier.

The feeding tube was gone.

Color had finally returned to her cheeks.

But when the courtroom doors opened...

She instinctively reached for her father's hand.

Nathan squeezed it.

"I'm here."

"This time..."

"I'm not going anywhere."

Lily nodded.

For the first time in months...

She believed him.

Victoria Hale—known legally as Vanessa Cole—entered wearing an orange jail uniform.

Gone were the designer dresses.

Gone was the flawless makeup.

But her eyes...

Still burned with the same cold hatred.

She smiled when she saw Nathan.

"You still blame yourself."

Nathan didn't answer.

Because she was right.

He did.

Every single day.

The prosecutor called witness after witness.

Nurse Megan described the threats she had overheard.

Head Nurse Carmen Ruiz explained the behavioral changes she had documented whenever Victoria entered Lily's room.

The hospital pharmacist testified that medication records had been altered using stolen credentials.

Digital forensic experts confirmed the voice recorder hidden inside the teddy bear had not been edited.

Every recording was authentic.

Victoria's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, the child has been manipulated."

Nathan felt Lily stiffen beside him.

The judge looked toward the witness room.

"Bring in Lily Whitmore."

Nathan whispered,

"You don't have to."

Lily shook her head.

"I do."

The courtroom became completely silent.

Lily walked to the witness stand carrying the faded blue teddy bear.

She wasn't asked complicated questions.

Only simple ones.

"Do you know the woman sitting over there?"

"Yes."

"Who is she?"

"My daddy's fiancée."

"Did she ever hurt you?"

Lily looked directly at Victoria.

"Yes."

"What did she do?"

The little girl hugged the teddy tighter.

"When Daddy left..."

"...she smiled different."

Several jurors exchanged glances.

Lily continued.

"She said nobody could hear me if I cried quietly."

The prosecutor asked gently,

"Why didn't you tell your father?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"Because she said..."

"...if Daddy loved me..."

"...he would have stayed."

Nathan lowered his head.

The courtroom was so quiet that even the reporters stopped writing.

Then Lily reached into her pocket.

She unfolded another drawing.

This one had two figures.

A little girl.

A man kneeling beside her.

Both were smiling.

"What does this drawing mean?" the prosecutor asked.

Lily smiled.

"It means..."

"...Daddy came back."

Nathan couldn't hold back his tears.

May you like

Not one person in the courtroom remained untouched.

Even the court reporter quietly wiped her eyes.
