CHAPTER 6 – THE TRUTH LILY HAD BEEN CARRYING

CHAPTER 6 – THE TRUTH LILY HAD BEEN CARRYING
Morning sunlight filtered through the hospital windows.
Nathan had not slept.
Neither had Lily.
She remained curled beside him while detectives continued searching every part of Victoria's life.
At 8:17 a.m., Detective Brooks returned carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
"We found something in Ms. Hale's apartment."
Nathan looked up.
Inside the envelope...
Was a small silver key.
Lily immediately recognized it.
"The music box."
Nathan frowned.
"What music box?"
Lily whispered,
"Mommy's."
Nathan's heart skipped.
Emily had owned an antique wooden music box.
After her death...
It had disappeared.
No one had ever found it.
Brooks nodded.
"We found the key taped underneath Victoria's jewelry case."
Nathan stared.
"Where's the box?"
"Storage unit."
"Registered under Vanessa Cole."
Less than two hours later...
Detectives opened the storage locker.
Dust floated through the air.
Old furniture.
Boxes.
Suitcases.
And...
A carved walnut music box.
Nathan's hands shook as he unlocked it.
The lid opened with a soft click.
Inside lay dozens of photographs.
Emily.
Nathan.
Baby Lily.
But beneath them...
A stack of letters.
Every one addressed to Nathan.
None had ever been mailed.
Nathan unfolded the first.
Emily's handwriting.
Nathan,
If anything happens to me, never let Lily near Vanessa. She blames me for everything. I'm frightened in a way I can't explain. If you're reading this, then I wasn't being paranoid after all.
Nathan's vision blurred.
There were more.
Another letter.
I think someone has been following me after work. I've reported it twice. Nothing has happened. If I disappear, promise me you'll believe Lily, even if she's too young to explain.
Nathan collapsed into a chair.
Years.
All these years.
Emily had tried to warn him.
But she never had the chance.
Detective Brooks carefully lifted another item from the music box.
A flash drive.
"Forensics first," she said.
By evening...
The results came back.
The drive contained hundreds of stolen emails.
Insurance documents.
Financial plans.
Hospital research.
Most importantly...
Audio recordings.
One recording changed everything.
Victoria's voice.
Recorded six years earlier.
"I don't care if Emily survives."
"As long as she loses everything."
Another voice answered.
"What if the accident goes wrong?"
Victoria laughed.
"Then that's her problem."
The room fell silent.
Detective Brooks looked directly at Nathan.
"This is enough."
She closed the folder.
"We're charging Vanessa Cole, also known as Victoria Hale, with attempted murder, child abuse, conspiracy, identity fraud, evidence tampering, and reopening the investigation into Emily Whitmore's death as a suspected murder-for-hire."
Nathan looked at Lily.
She reached into her pocket.
Carefully unfolded the crumpled drawing she had tried to give him before he left for Seattle.
The same drawing he had ignored.
Nathan finally looked closely.
The monster beside the little girl...
Wasn't alone.
Hidden behind the monster...
A shadow stood holding a broken car.
Tiny child's handwriting filled the bottom of the page.
"She hurt Mommy first."
Nathan broke down.
Not because the nightmare was over.
May you like
But because his eight-year-old daughter had been trying to tell him the truth...
Long before anyone was ready to listen.
