CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET INSIDE THE TEDDY BEAR

CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET INSIDE THE TEDDY BEAR
Nathan looked from Lily to the faded blue teddy bear sitting on the windowsill.
It had been there since the first day she was admitted.
Its fur was worn thin around one ear. One button eye had been replaced with black thread. Victoria herself had insisted the bear remain beside Lily every night.
"It comforts her," she had always said.
Now Victoria screamed from between the security guards.
"Don't touch it!"
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Every face in the room turned toward her.
Carmen Ruiz's expression hardened.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Nathan was already moving.
His hands trembled as he picked up the teddy bear.
It felt...
Heavy.
Far heavier than any stuffed animal should.
Victoria struggled violently.
"That's Lily's! Give it back!"
Nathan slowly turned the bear over.
A fresh line of stitching ran across its back.
Not factory stitching.
Hand-sewn.
Crooked.
Recent.
His pulse thundered.
He pulled a small pocketknife from his keychain.
Victoria went pale.
"No!"
The blade sliced through the thread.
Cotton spilled onto the floor.
Then...
A tiny black object dropped into Nathan's palm.
Not a toy.
Not medicine.
A digital voice recorder.
The room fell silent.
Nathan stared at it.
His thumb pressed PLAY.
Static crackled.
Then Lily's tiny voice filled the hospital room.
"...Daddy?"
Silence.
"I miss Daddy..."
Nathan closed his eyes.
Another voice interrupted.
Victoria.
Cold.
Flat.
"If you keep crying, he'll stop visiting."
Another recording.
Lily sobbing.
"My arm hurts."
Victoria laughing softly.
"It hurts because bad girls deserve pain."
Nathan felt his knees weaken.
The recordings continued.
Day after day.
Threat after threat.
"You'll never leave this hospital."
"Your father loves his money more than you."
"If you tell anyone, I'll make sure Daddy disappears forever."
Every sentence stabbed deeper than the last.
Even the security guards looked sick.
The young nurse Megan covered her mouth.
The physician whispered,
"My God..."
Nathan couldn't breathe.
Lily had recorded everything.
Without anyone knowing.
Using the tiny recorder hidden inside her teddy bear.
One final recording remained.
Nathan pressed play.
Victoria's voice.
Barely above a whisper.
"The medication tonight will make you sleep longer."
"When Daddy comes tomorrow, smile."
"If you tell him the truth..."
"...I'll make sure you never wake up."
The recorder clicked off.
Silence.
Victoria stopped struggling.
For several seconds she simply stared.
Then...
She smiled.
Not kindly.
Not nervously.
A smile filled with contempt.
"So that's where it went."
Nathan slowly looked at her.
"You tried to kill my daughter."
Victoria shrugged.
"You finally noticed."
The words stunned everyone.
The mask was gone.
Completely.
"You think I wanted to spend months pretending to love a sick little girl?"
Her voice echoed through the room.
"I was supposed to marry the richest widower in Boston."
"But every conversation..."
"...every vacation..."
"...every decision..."
"...was about Lily."
Nathan felt physically ill.
Victoria laughed.
"Do you know what people called you?"
"'The devoted father.'"
"You canceled meetings for her."
"You donated hospitals for her."
"You built your entire life around one fragile little child."
Her eyes blazed.
"I got tired of competing with an eight-year-old."
Nathan lunged.
Both guards grabbed him before he reached her.
"If you touch her," Carmen warned quietly, "she'll become the victim."
Nathan stopped.
His fists shook violently.
Victoria smiled again.
"You know the funny part?"
"I almost won."
She looked directly at Lily.
"Another month..."
"...and everyone would've believed her condition was getting worse naturally."
The physician suddenly looked up.
"What did you just say?"
Victoria realized too late.
The room had gone silent again.
"What condition?" Carmen asked.
"You said naturally."
The physician frowned.
"Lily's illness isn't progressing naturally."
Victoria didn't answer.
The doctor slowly turned toward the chart.
His face changed.
"Wait..."
He flipped several pages.
"No..."
His breathing quickened.
"This doesn't make sense."
Nathan stepped closer.
"What?"
The doctor looked up.
"Lily's blood tests."
"They've become worse..."
"...only after medication changes."
Carmen's eyes widened.
"What medication?"
The physician whispered,
"The medication Ms. Hale insisted we continue."
Everyone looked at Victoria.
She smiled.

But now...
There was fear behind it.
