CHAPTER 2 – THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

CHAPTER 2 – THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL
The hidden door opened with the low groan of old steel.
Cold air rolled out.
Dominic stared into the darkness.
"I built this house," he whispered.
"I know."
Elena didn't look at him.
"But you never built this room."
The staircase descended beneath the mansion, deeper than the wine cellar, deeper than the panic bunker every member of the Moretti family knew about.
This place wasn't on any blueprint.
It wasn't in any security file.
Someone had erased its existence decades ago.
Dominic drew his pistol.
"Who are you?"
Elena answered without turning around.
"The woman who's about to save your family."
She flipped a hidden switch.
Soft white lights flickered to life.
Dominic froze.
The underground room looked less like a bunker and more like a command center.
Rows of surveillance monitors covered one wall.
Shelves overflowed with files.
Hard drives.
Encrypted laptops.
Stacks of photographs.
Every inch of the Moretti estate had been watched.
Not by Victoria.
By Elena.
His pulse thundered.
"You've been spying on me."
"No."
She finally faced him.
"I've been protecting your children."
She inserted a small memory card into a computer.
Dozens of folders appeared.
Each one carried a date.
Three months.
Exactly the same period shown in the videos.
Every movement inside the mansion had been documented.
Every bruise.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Every lie.
Dominic opened one file.
Victoria smiling at breakfast.
The timestamp changed.
Minutes later, she shoved Sophia into a closet because the little girl had spilled milk.
Another recording.
Victoria hugging Lucas in front of guests.
Five minutes later...
She forced the seven-year-old to kneel on broken glass inside the laundry room.
Dominic's breathing became ragged.
"I hired thirty-two guards."
Elena nodded.
"And seventeen of them were bribed."
She clicked another folder.
Dominic watched security officers deliberately turn cameras away whenever Victoria entered the children's hallway.
Another clip.
A nanny accepting an envelope filled with cash.
Another.
The family doctor signing false medical reports.
"No visible injuries."
"No evidence of abuse."
Dominic crushed the computer mouse in his hand.
"They all knew."
"They were paid to know."
Silence swallowed the room.
Then Elena opened one final folder.
Its name was different.
BETRAYAL.
Inside were photographs Dominic had never seen.
Victoria meeting strangers.
Luxury hotels.
Private airports.
Warehouse docks.
Armed escorts.
Then came the image that made his blood run cold.
Victoria wasn't standing beside a stranger.
She was embracing Alessandro Romano.
Dominic's oldest enemy.
The man responsible for his brother's murder eight years earlier.
The room seemed to shrink.
"No..."
Elena enlarged the photograph.
"They've been working together."
"For how long?"
"Almost a year."
Dominic staggered backward.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The unexpected police raids.
Lost shipments.
Dead informants.
Failed negotiations.
Someone had been feeding Romano every move the Moretti family made.
That someone had been sleeping beside him every night.
Elena pressed another key.
Audio filled the room.
Victoria's voice.
Clear.
Confident.
"I'll marry Dominic."
A man's laughter answered.
"And afterward?"
She didn't hesitate.
"The children disappear first."
Dominic's vision blurred.
"They're the only heirs."
"And Dominic?"
A pause.
Then Victoria laughed.
"He dies believing I loved him."
The recording ended.
Nothing moved.
Nothing breathed.
Dominic had survived ambushes.
Bombings.
Assassination attempts.
None of them had hurt like twenty-three seconds of recorded conversation.
He slowly looked at Elena.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried."
She opened a drawer.
Inside were seven sealed envelopes.
Each one addressed to Dominic.
Each one unopened.
"My messages never reached you."
He recognized his own security seal.
Someone inside his organization had intercepted every warning.
His empire wasn't leaking.
It was rotten.
From the inside out.
Suddenly every monitor flashed red.
An alarm echoed through the hidden room.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Elena's face lost all color.
"No..."
She rushed to the surveillance screens.
Victoria wasn't in her bedroom anymore.
She wasn't in the living room.
She wasn't anywhere inside the mansion.
One black SUV after another rolled through the front gates.
Twenty armed men climbed out.
Not Moretti soldiers.
Romano assassins.
Dominic checked the time.
11:58 p.m.
"The wedding rehearsal..." he whispered.
"It was never about the wedding."
Elena nodded once.
"It was the perfect excuse to gather everyone who wanted you dead."
A new camera activated.
Victoria stood outside smiling.
She opened the mansion doors herself.
She wasn't escaping.
She was welcoming them in.
Then she looked directly into one of the security cameras.
Smiled.
And spoke six words that echoed through the hidden bunker.
"Kill the father. Bring me the children."
Sophia screamed upstairs.
Lucas shouted her name.
Dominic was already running.
But Elena grabbed his arm one final time.
"This isn't an attack."
He looked at her.
She handed him a thick black folder stamped with a faded government seal.
"No."
Her voice was steady despite the chaos above.
"It's the final phase of a plan that began before your children were even born."
Dominic opened the folder.

The first page contained only one sentence.
The Moretti heir was never the real target.
