Chapter 4: Lily

Chapter 4: Lily
The hidden passage smelled of stone and damp earth.
Victor led with a flashlight.
Declan stayed beside Clara.
Behind them, explosions echoed through the mansion.
Every blast sounded like another piece of his old life collapsing.
After several minutes, the tunnel opened into a forgotten wine cellar beneath an abandoned chapel nearly half a mile from the estate.
Cold night air rushed inside.
Victor immediately checked the surroundings.
"We're clear."
For now.
Declan turned to Clara.
"No more secrets."
"Where is my daughter?"
Clara looked toward the distant tree line.
"With the only people I ever trusted."
She led them to an old pickup truck hidden beneath camouflage netting.
Inside sat an elderly couple.
The moment the woman saw Clara, she burst into tears.
"Oh, thank God."
"They found the house."
Clara nodded.
"I'm sorry."
The elderly man quietly opened the truck's back door.
Inside...
A little girl slept beneath a faded quilt, hugging a stuffed rabbit missing one button eye.
Golden curls rested against her cheeks.
Tiny fingers clutched the rabbit as though it were the safest thing in the world.
Declan stopped breathing.
The world disappeared.
No gunfire.
No empire.
No betrayal.
Only her.
She looked exactly like Amelia.
The same nose.
The same soft curls.
The same peaceful expression.
As if grief had been given a heartbeat.
Clara whispered,
"Lily..."
The little girl's eyes fluttered open.
Bright blue.
Amelia's eyes.
She looked at the strangers surrounding the truck without fear.
Then her gaze settled on Declan.
For several seconds she simply studied him.
Children often sensed things adults ignored.
Finally she asked in the smallest voice,
"Are you the man from Mommy's picture?"
Declan's heart shattered.
"What picture?"
Lily reached beneath her blanket.
She carefully unfolded an old photograph.
It was worn from being handled hundreds of times.
Amelia stood smiling beside Declan during happier days, his arm wrapped protectively around her shoulders.
On the back, written in Amelia's handwriting, were six simple words.
Your daddy will always find you.
Declan could no longer hold back the tears.
He dropped to one knee beside the truck.
"I'm so sorry."
"So very sorry."
Lily tilted her head.
"Why are you crying?"
His voice broke.
"Because I missed eighteen months of loving you."
Without hesitation, the little girl reached out and touched his face with her tiny hand.
"It's okay."
"You found me."
Before Declan could answer—
A red laser dot appeared on the truck's windshield.
Then another.
And another.
Victor spun around.
"Snipers!"
From the darkness, dozens of armed figures emerged, surrounding the chapel in perfect silence.
Each wore black tactical gear marked with the silver raven insignia.
A tall man stepped forward, removing his helmet.
A long scar crossed his left eye.
He smiled as though greeting old friends.
"Good evening, Mr. Moretti."
"My employer thanks you."
Declan instinctively shielded Lily.
"Who are you?"
The man gave a slight bow.
"My name is Adrian Kane."
"I've come to collect the child."
Then, from behind the mercenaries, another luxury car rolled slowly into the clearing.
Its rear door opened.
Celeste Moretti stepped out gracefully, untouched by the chaos at the mansion.
She looked directly at Lily.
Then spoke the words that made everyone's blood run cold.
"Bring my granddaughter to me."
Lily tightened her grip on Declan's coat.
Then whispered something only he could hear.
May you like
"Daddy..."
"...Grandma scares me."
