Chapter 3: The Child They Came to Claim

Chapter 3: The Child They Came to Claim

The gunfire outside grew louder.

Windows rattled.

Somewhere below, men shouted orders in Italian.

Declan never took his eyes off Clara.

"Who found her?" he demanded.

Clara struggled to breathe.

"They're not after your empire."

"They never were."

"They only want Lily."

The name struck him like lightning.

"Lily?"

Clara nodded, tears spilling freely.

"Amelia named her before she died."

"Lillian Rose Moretti."

"My daughter has a name..."

For the first time in eighteen months, Declan spoke of his child as someone living.

Before another word could be said—

Marco tightened his grip on the pistol.

"Boss."

"I'm sorry."

"But Mrs. Moretti wants the letter."

Declan's expression hardened.

"You'll have to kill me."

Marco hesitated.

Just enough.

Declan lunged.

Years of combat training took over.

He slammed Marco's wrist into the nursery doorframe.

The gun fired.

The bullet shattered the tiny wooden moon hanging from the doorknob.

Pieces scattered across the floor.

The same moon Amelia had painted before Lily was born.

Marco cried out as the pistol slipped from his hand.

Declan drove his shoulder into the captain's chest, throwing him backward into the hallway.

Another guard rushed around the corner.

Declan recognized him instantly.

Victor.

One of his oldest men.

Victor raised his weapon—

Then fired.

Not at Declan.

At Marco.

The bullet struck Marco squarely in the shoulder.

He collapsed with a scream.

Victor sprinted forward.

"Boss!"

"We have maybe two minutes."

Declan caught the pistol.

"Report."

"The estate is compromised."

"Half our men are fighting."

"The other half..."

He looked briefly toward Celeste.

"...aren't on our side."

Declan wasn't surprised anymore.

He looked at his mother.

"You planned this."

Celeste remained perfectly composed.

"I prepared for every outcome."

"You betrayed your own son."

"I protected the Moretti bloodline."

"You tried to erase it."

"No."

Her smile returned.

"I tried to control it."

Clara suddenly stepped forward.

"You never wanted Lily dead."

Celeste finally looked at her.

"You wanted her hidden until she could be used."

The room fell silent.

Clara continued.

"You were waiting until Declan became weak enough to surrender control."

"Then you'd reveal his daughter."

"He would obey you forever."

Celeste didn't deny it.

Instead she smiled.

"You always were observant."

Declan felt sick.

Every tragedy.

Every lie.

Every month of grief.

A calculated move in a decades-long game.

The radio on Victor's shoulder crackled.

"They're through the main hall!"

"Repeat—they're asking for the nurse."

Clara's heart nearly stopped.

"They know I'm here."

Declan grabbed her arm.

"Who are they?"

She whispered one terrifying name.

"The Black Ravens."

Victor's face turned white.

"No..."

Declan frowned.

"You know them?"

Victor nodded.

"They don't work for money."

"They don't work for territory."

"They recover...people."

"Who hired them?"

Victor looked toward Celeste.

She simply folded her hands.

"I never said they were my enemies."

Declan stared.

"You hired mercenaries to hunt your own granddaughter?"

"I hired professionals to retrieve what belongs to this family."

The front doors exploded inward.

The blast echoed through the mansion.

Dust filled the corridor.

Automatic gunfire erupted downstairs.

Victor looked toward the staircase.

"They're inside."

Declan shoved the nursery key into Clara's hand.

"Is there another way out?"

She hesitated.

Then remembered.

"Amelia showed me something."

"What?"

"A hidden staircase."

Declan frowned.

"I built this house."

"You don't know every secret your wife left behind."

Clara hurried to the old wardrobe.

She pushed aside a row of baby blankets.

Behind them—

A tiny brass latch.

She pulled it.

The entire wardrobe slowly swung outward.

A narrow stone staircase disappeared into darkness.

Victor stared.

"I've lived here fifteen years..."

"I never knew."

Clara looked at Declan.

"Amelia said..."

"If the house ever becomes dangerous..."

"...take our daughter through the moon passage."

Declan swallowed hard.

May you like

Even in death...

His wife had prepared for betrayal.
