Chapter 2: The Woman Behind Every Lie

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind Every Lie
The smile on Celeste Moretti's face never reached her eyes.
Instead, it settled there like polished marble—cold, elegant, impossible to read.
Declan slowly folded Amelia's letter and slipped it into the inside pocket of his coat without breaking eye contact with his mother.
The nursery suddenly felt too small.
Too quiet.
Too dangerous.
"You've been awake late, Mother," he said evenly.
Celeste stepped inside as though she belonged there.
"I heard voices."
Her gaze drifted toward Clara.
The young maid stood frozen beside the rocking chair, tears still glistening on her cheeks.
For the briefest second, fear flashed across her face.
Not fear of Declan.
Fear of Celeste.
Celeste noticed.
"Oh, Clara," she sighed with practiced disappointment. "After everything we did for you."
Clara's hands trembled.
"You lied."
"I protected a child."
Celeste chuckled softly.
"No."
Her voice became razor sharp.
"You stole one."
Declan looked from one woman to the other.
"What exactly is happening?"
Neither answered immediately.
Instead, Celeste slowly approached the crib, brushing invisible dust from its wooden rail.
"I wondered when this room would become useful again."
Declan's jaw tightened.
"My daughter."
He spoke each word separately.
"Is."
"Alive?"
Celeste finally looked at him.
"Yes."
The single word hit him harder than any bullet ever could.
His knees nearly gave out.
Alive.
His little girl had breathed.
She had cried.
She had survived.
Everything he had buried...
Every anniversary he had spent drinking alone...
Every flower he had placed on an empty grave...
Every sleepless night...
A lie.
He turned toward Clara.
"Tell me."
She swallowed.
"The night Amelia went into labor..."
Her voice shook.
"...someone switched hospitals."
Declan frowned.
"What?"
"You were called away."
He remembered.
A shipment had supposedly been ambushed at the docks.
Three warehouses burned.
Six of his men were killed.
Or so he'd been told.
"I never made it to the delivery room."
Clara nodded.
"That wasn't an accident."
Celeste interrupted with an impatient sigh.
"It was necessary."
Declan's eyes snapped toward her.
"Necessary?"
"The Moretti family was under attack."
"You said that."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"I mean we had enemies inside our own organization."
Declan's expression hardened.
"You let me believe my wife died alone."
"I saved the family."
"You stole my child!"
"I kept her alive."
Silence exploded between them.
Clara finally spoke.
"That's not true."
Celeste's head turned slowly.
"Oh?"
"You didn't save her."
"You ordered her killed."
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Declan stared at Clara.
"What did you say?"
Clara reached into another pocket and removed something wrapped in cloth.
She unfolded it carefully.
Inside lay a tiny silver cross.
The chain had been broken years ago.
"There was another nurse."
Declan recognized nothing about it.
Clara continued.
"Her name was Evelyn."
"She overheard Mrs. Moretti giving instructions."
Celeste's face remained expressionless.
"'No heirs,' she said."
Declan felt his pulse hammering inside his ears.
Clara continued.
"Evelyn refused."
"So did I."
"The doctor was threatened."
"The security cameras in maternity mysteriously stopped recording."
"And then..."
She looked at the silver cross.
"Evelyn took the baby."
Declan whispered,
"My daughter..."
Clara nodded.
"Evelyn ran through the emergency stairwell."
"She handed the baby to me in the parking garage."
"What happened to Evelyn?"
Clara closed her eyes.
"They found her."
Declan already knew the answer.
"She never came home."
His hands curled into fists so tight his knuckles whitened.
He slowly turned toward his mother.
"You murdered a nurse."
Celeste smiled sadly.
"I eliminated a liability."
Something inside Declan cracked.
For forty-three years, he had believed there was one line the Moretti family never crossed.
His mother had erased it long before he was born.
"You killed Amelia too."
For the first time...
Celeste hesitated.
Only for a heartbeat.
Then—
"No."
Clara gasped.
"You're lying."
"I was there."
"I saw what happened."
Celeste's eyes narrowed.
"You saw what I allowed you to see."
Declan's breathing became uneven.
"What do you mean?"
Before Celeste could answer—
A gun clicked.
Everyone turned.
One of Declan's own security captains stood in the nursery doorway.
Marco.
He had served the Moretti family for twenty-two years.
His pistol was pointed directly at Declan.
"I'm sorry, Boss."
His voice sounded genuinely broken.
"I don't have a choice."
Declan didn't move.
"You work for me."
Marco slowly shook his head.
"I always worked for her."
He nodded toward Celeste.
Clara stepped backward instinctively.
Declan's eyes darkened.
"How many?"
Marco answered quietly.
"Twenty-three."
Declan's blood froze.
Twenty-three of his guards...
Twenty-three men he trusted with his life...
Belonged to his mother.
Celeste folded her hands elegantly.
"I built this empire."
"You merely inherited it."
Outside—
The mansion's security alarms suddenly erupted.
Red emergency lights flooded the hallway.
Another guard's voice echoed through the intercom.
"Intruders!"
"North gate breached!"
"Unknown vehicles entering the estate!"
Gunfire exploded somewhere downstairs.
Marco looked confused.
"That's impossible."
Celeste frowned for the first time.
"I wasn't expecting anyone tonight."
Declan heard engines roaring across the front lawn.
More than a dozen.
Then came another voice over the radio.
Panicked.
"They're asking for Mr. Moretti!"
"They're saying..."
Static swallowed the sentence.
Then—
"...they have the little girl."
Every person in the nursery froze.
Clara's face drained of color.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No, no, no..."
Declan grabbed her shoulders.
"Who has my daughter?"
Clara looked into his eyes, horror overwhelming every feature.
"The people I've been hiding her from..."
May you like
She barely managed the final words.
"They found us."
